Probe/Mini-Probe Question

I am interested in adding a probe and/or mini-probe to my collection. In some photos, you see these knives with attached yellow plastic lanyards. However, the probes that I have seen for sale DO NOT have the lanyards. I contacted Spyderco HQ and asked if the knives were originally sold with the lanyards and the answer was YES.

So, my question - would you buy a probe if it didn't have the lanyard?

I would suppose that if you bought a probe without the lanyard that it would be difficult or impossible to find a replacement lanyard. Is this a correct assumption?

All opinions/comments welcomed.

Yes I would (and did!). When I bought my Probe and Mini-Probe I didn't even know at the time that there were wrist thongs that went with them. I love the design of the two pieces and would buy another without if I could, they don't come up for sale very often.

On the other hand, it would be nice to have a complete set (with box, knife and strap) for collectors value. The choice is up to the collector, you could always buy one now, keep looking for a complete one, then trade it later for a different Spydie. In the mean time, at least you will have one...

I am not familer with the Probe or Mini-Probe, could someone post a picture of these knives or direct me to photos on the web?
Also, is anyone aware of a site that has them for sale?
Thanks

Both of my probes Mini & reg. are without wrist thong
But I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find me one.

I think that if you visit a local dive shop (assuming you live by water) you should be able to pick up some of the surgical tubing used by divers for wrist straps. I think the original tubing with the probes was a yellow/green color.

Indeed Dave. Most scuba gear shops have them with the rubber tubes already in place. I picked one up sometime last year. The original yellow thonged tube had rapidly deteriorated without seeing any use! Unless they are stored in some sort of temperature/ atmosphere controlled room, they will all eventually dry, crack and finally fall apart.

Aries,

Here's the one of the pictures you requested. This is the Probe. The upper knife has the original belt clip on it. I think they only made a few with the clip before they decided it wasn't sturdy enough and ground the rest off. Usually you find the lower model. The miniprobe is smaller, but essentially the same knife.
