ok i know how to hand sharpen. i can keep a consistent angle. but with ym new waterstone, 6000/1000, i seem to be dulling my knives and i have no clue why. my only thinking is that while i polish the ege with the 6000 any scratches i miss are becoming more prominent and this is actually making the knife more dull? what do you guys and gals think?

the angle is actually really low and i am using very light pressure. so it dulling is jsut confusing me...

On the 6000 you might be biting into the stone try using as a strop instead.

i dont have a magnifier is the thing. and is weird. im using the exact same motions as i do with ym ceramic hone, and that thing puts an edge on it like i wouldnt believe. this 6000 is jsut dulling hwat my ceramic does. and my ceramic is jsut a DC4 falkniven sharpener. weird man. it is literally making the edge coarser.

strange thing, i also use a fallkniven ceramic stone, and puts a great edge on any of my knives, but a 6000 grit, i dont have and i didn't use
lets wait a while and see what others have to say :D

ok wait we shall. its jsut really confusing to me. it doesnt make sense in ym mind. the falkniven is great though eh? i love mine. though id love this 6000 if it frikken worked too.

actually im going from my ceramic to the 6000. and i alternate sides. and from my ceramic it is already hair popping sharp. so this shouldnt hurt it i would think.

yes the fallkniven is a great stone :D
i use it more than my sharpmaker, because it more easy to carry around
but the edge i put with the fallkniven stone or the sharpmaker its good enough for my taste, so that is why i didnt get such a high grit stone
i understand the need for a scary high polished edge, for that i use my leather strop on my straight razor.
strange thing that with your 6000 stone
you said that is a water stone
is it a japanese one ? maybe it has something to do with the water technique, i dont now, im guessing

ya i use my falkniven more than my sharpmaker too. and i got the 6000 cause i wanted to know what the next level was and to have a very nicely polished edge. it is polished with the falkniven but i wanted more:o now im kinda stuck tryin to figure this stuff out.

so, again, what kind of stone is that 6000
if its japanese, it HAS to be used with water, is the way it works
and i think that there is a way of using that water correctly

ok i think im getting this. i was using the stone wet, meaning there was sitting water on the top of the stone. maybe it was allowing the metal particles to float around and micro micro chip the edge, thus making it feel coarse. i think this because now that im drying it after washing it i seem to be able to put a decent edge on the knives, and they are shiney :D but i still wonder if this is the corect way to do this. never had a problem with ym arkansas stone while they were dry. so maybe i figured it out.

if its not a japanese stone, even if its called a waterstone, it should have no problems sharpening dry, and from what i know, sharpening without water/oil is the way to go
glad we did come to result, be it as it is
cheers

sorry jack trades, it is a japanese water stone. king to be exact. but i dont know. i still get a sharper edge with ym falkniven. but my edge is shinier now, i jsut have to strop it to get it as sharp, not that i mind.:p

ok so im getting my knives sharp now but not the scary sharp i see some people getting with their polished edges. like...i HAVE to strop after sharpening to get my knive to cleanly cut paper receipts. any suggestions?

Check your waterstones with a good straight edge and see if they are truly flat. They tend to get dished pretty quickly with lots of use. I had the same problem you're having and after flattening the stone it cut beautiful edges again.

well the thing with me and the stone is that it was brand new. but i did flatten it. didnt change a thing.
