Have refurbished vintage axes with new and sometime old refitted handles. On some hangs when i go to hammer in metal step wedge the axe head bounces upward and Ihave to rehit the bottom of handle to reseat it. What am i doing wrong?

I’d guess that you’re too tight at the bottom of the eye and that your primary wood wedge isn’t tight enough - maybe bottomed out.

Got pics? You’d have to post them to an image hosting site and then link to the photos.

I've had this issue on looser fits as well.

If your wood wedge is good and tight it shouldn't ride up (like squarepeg said).

I set the bottom of the axe handle on to my rubber floor mats when driving the wedges, or my work bench on hatchets. It usually prevents the head from riding up. You could use a block of wood. Most fawn foot handles have a flat spot these days, be sure you are on it square so you don't damage the haft.

Drive that wooden wedge like you stole it.
