Hello everyone, I am a newbie to knife. Recently i use the gatco sharpening system to reprofile my mini-grip. The blade becomes razor sharp......but the tip was rounded off.......:(

Is it possible to bring the tip back by using the gatco?

this is my first thread on this forum, any help is great!
Thanks!!!!:D

A rounded tip is usually due to running the tip off the stone while sharpening. Stop your stroke while the tip is still on the surface.

Also, with any new sharpening system, it's best to practice on a cheap knife instead of your Benchmade. :)

Good luck.

you can bring the tip back over time. dont try to get it out all at once or you'll take life from your blade. do what dsmegst said to solve the problem. cheap kitchen knives are good to practice on.

Best to take the tip to a flat stone and work it back into a V-profile. As RichardJ says this takes time and patience and you will remove a lot of metal in the process. You can only do that so many times before you end up with a tanto ;) When maintenance sharpening, try to end the stroke about 1/4" or so before you get to the tip. Then work on the tip separately with light strokes. Tips do not generally dull as fast as the larger blade edge because you rarely use the tip to cut course materials like cardboard etc.

thx guys! all of you are really helpful! I just finish my shower and there are already 3 replies!
thx u all!

Also, if you want the tip back immediately, take the pine of the knife to a stone to reintroduce a tip. If you do that, the way to tell if there's still a round part on your tip, even if it looks pointy, is to hold the knife with the tip pointed towards you and slowly move it back and forth and up and down, and if you can see some shiny to it, you need to sharpen the tip down a bit more. When i'm done with that i blend it all together and then sand it down so it's dull and blends. but i see you have a black coated blade so that may be difficult!

Would u mind elaborate more on this?

Man you really did a number on that tip.
If you can't fix it yourself, you may wanna think about sending it back to Benchmade so they can fix it for you.

what suzuki was trying to tell you to do was sand down the spine of the blade to reshape the tip. he left out the s in spine.

198929,

Just out of curiosity, was any power tool used on that knife? That's something more likely to be seen from a belt sander, where the knife is rocked back improperly to reach the tip.

Anyway, you've gone beyond a normal tip rounding... you've rounded the whole front of the blade where a good portion of it now approaches the spine at almost 90 degrees. Without some major reprofiling, you won't be able to just sharpen the blade and eventually sharpen it out. You can create a "point" with what you have now, but not a tip like it once was.

If you have access to another one, or a good picture from the internet, you could mark the blade with a Sharpie to get an idea of how to form a new one. You'll actually need to remove metal some distance away from the tip, and work toward forming a new one. It would be pretty tough to do with the Gatco. Not practical really. I'm not sure even Benchmade would fix that. I think I've read that you can buy a replacement blade for $25??? That might be a better fix.

Are those chips along the edge in the first pic ? I don't think they are chips, but looks like ones.

i would use the knife and work on fixing the edge as it is being resharpened. i have fixed knives with damage exactly like that but i dont like to since it takes life from the blade like i said earlier.
