Follow up to my other post!

I usually carry an automatic knife in my wasteband due to my work attire, and I’ll be traveling somewhere for work that isn’t in an auto friendly state.

I couldn’t find a knife I liked as much as my Benchmade Stimulus, so I bought another and converted my old one to manual!

Simply removing the coil spring would have still made the knife illegal in the state I’m traveling too since it would be a “gravity” knife. To fix that issue, I used my dremel to make a little nail nick, and then tightened down the pivot just enough so it will not open with a “flick,” but still is easy to open with the nail nick.

Now I have what is essentially a two hand opening friction folder with a button lock and safety. I’m not a lawyer, but I figured a friction folder that locks closed should be well within the laws of a state that bans autos.

Well done M Midwesterntime , wishing you safe travels ahead and a happy return to home afterwards.

Like I said, didn’t find any I liked that weren’t autos, so I fixed my issue with a bit of handy work.
I find it hard to believe that with thousands of different models available, there would not be one that didn't work for you. But whatever, it's your knife.

Clever solution! Safe travels!

Your fingernails must be in great shape, given the rearward location of the nick and the tightened-down pivot! ;) Good on you for the custom solution - and you can always refit the spring to revert to auto.

That was the plan! The nail nick actually works really well, and I don’t feel it detracts from the look of the knife when I do convert it back to auto.

Why do you have to be that way? Just move along and don’t say anything if you can’t be nice.
Lol you think that was mean? You have some pretty thin skin, it was just an observation. I said it's your knife, you can do what you want. Welcome to a discussion forum.

Honest question here…wouldn’t it still be illegal since it’s original intended purpose was a switchblade, and could still be converted back?

Good question.
I think it comes down to how the Law is written.
Does it discuss how the knife opens?
Or how it was designed to open?

Most laws I’ve seen about them just say “knife with blade that opens with a button, switch, or centrifugal force” or something like that, but I’m sure there’s some overzealous cop out there who will say otherwise…

Here in New York: the definition of an auto knife mentions opening with the aid of a spring or springs..

OP didn’t say you were being mean, just that you weren’t very nice, which you weren’t. Very arrogant. I side with OP on this one.
For anyone not in the know, this is the OP's other account, of which he has three. So when nephron44 refers to the OP, he actually means he agrees with himself.

Don't trust people who can't post in good faith.
