Problem using flats of my Sharpmaker

Hi guys I've been using my Sharpmaker on my Benchmade 710 M2. I'm happy with the results. But I think there may be something wrong with my technique or my particular sharpmaker. It seems there's not much difference between using the flats and the corner of the sticks. When using the flat ceramic stick, the blade still mainly contacts the front corner of the sticks, on both the medium and fine. Any ideas or comments? Thanks for the help.

A 710's a recurve? Pardon me, GarageBoy's right. Recurves, and any other strongly curved blades- hawkbills, for example, should be sharpened on the corners only.

I agree with Sword and Shield -- I had the same problem when I first got my Sharpmaker (still do sometimes).

One of these days I'm gonna figure out how to mount one the the x-fine stones I bought for the Sharpmaker on my EdgePro Professional. It's just a matter figuring out how to bond it squarely to the end of a piece of 5/16" rod stock (or drill stock if I want to get real anal about having a straight guide rod).

Shalom,
Mark

On a recurved blade I would use the flats only to touch up the 0.5-1 in towards the tip and for that I agree with S&S (angle). The rest of the blade see GB.

I would feel free to use the flats on a recurve. All that happens is that you hone on the sides of the corners. It's just no big deal.
