Problem with a commander

I have an Emerson Comander and the lock has recently failed. This occured shortly after sharpening my knife and lasted for about two days. It was so bad that i could close the knife one handed with only one finger on the blade, without moving the liner lock out of the way (the blade just pushed it back into the unlocked position). It started with it just moving some and resulted in the knife having almost no locking qualities at all. Then all of a sudden it just started to work again. The locking mechanism isn't even showing signs of the problem experienced. Can any one shead some light on why this happened and how to aviod it. I'm thinking about sending it in but don't want to spend the money just to have it sent back with a note every thing is fine and we think you just dont' know how to work a knife. Any advice would be appriciated.
Thanks

try opening knife, then lightly tap the blade against something to check the lock, if it is solid i wouldnt worry about it, perhaps something was caught between the liner and frame, or ?? if it folds up send it in, EKI will fix it.

usually if the wont lock, they wont lock, dont get better after a day/2

wow, that's crazy.

i say send it back. it's worth the money, even if you DO get a letter back saying it's fine. at least, i would pay 15 dollars for peace of mind.

Thanks guys. I did check it just to make sure it wasn't caused by a lose screw and when i ruled that out (by loosing and tightening it) I checked to see if any thing looked wornout but nothing was visually wrong that i could see (not that i'm an expert knife repairman). I think i will send it in just to make sure there is nothing that will come back and take a finger off when it does. once again thanks for the advice.

yeah

you could have gotten too much lube on the tang... that will sometimes do it.

an easy fix is to disassemble it, bend the lock more so the tension is tighter (bend it at the crease where the lock separates from the liner, not any closer to the mate face!). make sure that there's enough bend such that in 'neutral' spring tension it will fully engage the lock on the other side.

that'll usually fix a lock that sometimes slips.

if the lock always slip with spine pressure or hitting, you need a reground tang mate face... send it.

to be safe... send it. :) EKI service is the best.

I had thought of the oil thing too and yesterday i noticed it sliping a little but i think it is the oposite. Call me crazy but it seems to slip more when there is less oil and stop sliping when there is a decent amount of oil on the hinge.

Here is the final scoop. I had emailed the company about the problem. I just got the responce a few hours ago. They told me to take it apart and see if cleaning it up and reoiling it takes care of the problem. This I happily did to see how exactly the knife worked. The problem seems to have been completely resolved and the knife is as good as i remember it being. So I believe the problem is taken care of but at the first sign of return you better beleive I'm sending it but for now i can't see the point in sending it in when the problem seems to have been resolved.
Thanks for all your help, and thank you Mr. Emerson for making such a kick tail product.
