Problem with Buck Strider 880

I just got my brand new in the box 880 spear point in the mail. Man was I excited to get this knife. It was supposed to be the end all knife for a folder, but what a let down.

First it had two grind marks on the blade about a 3/8 wide, one on each side. Then I noticed the liner lock went past center, flush with the furthest side of the blade. The liner only touched the blade on one edge of the liner, not flush. I also noticed that the liner was off color like it was over heated. Lastly after opening up the knife a few times the ball in liner came out.

This is not typical for standard Buck knives, I have several. I don't know what happened to quality control on this knife. I am sending it back to the factory tomorrow.

Has anyone else had similar problems with this knife?

The lame thing is I already waited 2 weeks for it to get here and now I have to wait how ever long it takes them to fix it or replace it.

Maaaan  , what´s the problem with sending that thing back to where you got it and ask for a better one?

This is a knife related forum not a disillusion related one.

On the ambi-thumbstud versions, they started heat hardening the Ti liner where it contacts the blade.

However, the rest are obv. not right. The 880 I owned for a time had very good fit/finish, better than I'd expected.

Major web sites like will just replace bad knife you just purchased no need to send it to factory.

Thanks, Vassili.

I was going to’ make a remark about buying a Buck in the first place, but I realized its been awhile since I looked at one. Beside the 110’s I had as a kid, (solid knives that were a real bitch to sharpen), it seemed that their quality control had really tanked sometime in the late 80’s. Now with such stiff competition from all the “new” upstart companies I suppose buck had to step up or die.

As I saw suggested earlier in the thread, try exchanging it where you bought it, explain the situation. If that doesn’t work, go strait to Buck, hopefully the will reconcile the situation.

Good luck -john

Sounds like a lemon slipped through quality control. If it were me I'd send it back where you are likely to get the faster new knife. If from where I bought it told me they'd get a new one right out I wouldn't mess with the factory because they will surely be 10 or more business days.

I had a similar problem with a Buck 880. The locking liner went all the way across the blade and did not lock up securely. I emailed Buck, and sent off the knife, and within a week, they had it sent back to me priority mail, and better than new.

Buck's customer service is nothing short of phenomenal in my opinion (it is as good as Spyderco's - which is saying a lot). If you call or email them and let them know the problem they will make it right, and will get the knife back to you quickly.

I have owned two other Buck Striders that were absolutely flawless, supposedly the 880 spear points had a batch where the liners were not set up correctly. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I've got an 881sp (I think that's the one, it's the smaller of version of yours). It came with a little blade play in front to back, and side to side, I ended up completely taking it down and cleaning it, and bending the liner spring a bit, then putting everything back together and it's MUCH better. If I was in a SHTF situation, it's a knife I'd be glad to have, though part of me finds myself wanting to buy its big brother.... Decisions, decisions, decisions... :D

I'd send it in to Buck. They have one of the best customer services in the industry. You can be sure that you'll get a perfect one back from them.

Buck has always been one of my favorite companies. I really like Paul Bos also. He is a great guy and has gone out of his way for hobbyist guys like me in the past. That goes a long way with loyalty. My biggest problem when I have a problem like this with a new knife is patience. I want my knife and I want it now. :D

I had a similar experience, and I drove over to the factory and they simply said "sorry you had to drive, here's a new one, test it out and see if you like it." Needless to say I was impressed. It also helps of course that I got to sit down and talk with C.J. Buck and he autographed my knives. But great service. Send it in, they'll make everything better.

I have found the Buck/Strider knives to be the worst stuff from Buck. They usually come absolutely filthy, meaning once you touch the blade it comes away black. That and the grinds can be horribly uneven.

I sent it back today; I figure I will be taken care of by Buck better than the company I bought it from (Flames and Knives, Ebay store) due to Buck has their name on it. Besides if I were Buck I would want to know about a bad knife coming off the line.

Hopefully I will have the same experience as some of you with Buck getting the knife back to me ASAP. I sold some of my other knives for this one. I think once the problems are fixed, it will be the end all knife (for a folder that is).

I have the Solution and its flawless. Talk about an awesome knife. I was thinking about getting one of the newer fixed bladed Buck/Striders, but I just don’t know about the 420HC.

The only decent Buck folding knife I ever owned was a model 110. The lock on my Buck model 112 was just sloppy. (I've seen el-cheapos from Pakistan that locked up better). The lock on my Dad's Buck Duke was also less than ideal. Not as bad as the one on my 112; but that's not saying much!

Here is the scoop. I sent my knife on Tuesday and got it back on Saturday. Yes the same week. It only took Buck 3 days to take car of my knife (2 days shipping). Thats what I call service. The knife is now up to speed and is performing like I would expect from a Buck/Strider. After using it for a few days, I could say it is the knife that will not fail (all ready pryed a door open at work with it and not a scratch).

As for Joe, he's there for a reason. I sent him off an e-mail and he replied to me the same day. Then when I got the knife I sent him another e-mail saying how pleased I was. I wouldn't expect a reply from most people, but you geusted it, Joe replied to the second e-mail. I'm very impressed with Joe and Buck. I was so impressed I had to order another Buck/Strider, the 882 with G-10 handles.

I'm glad it worked out for you, I was waiting for the outcome because I'm considering buying one.

Good Luck with it

I have nothing but great things to say about Buck Knives and Joe Houser service!:thumbup::thumbup:

I have to just mirror what I here everyone saying. Send it back to Buck, their customer service is next to none.

I'm glad buck took care of you. Seems to me any company can have a bad product slip through every now and then that's the price you pay for mass production and lower prices. Where a company makes a name and either keeps or loses my business is how they treat the customer after the sale when a problem arises. From my experience Buck, Kershaw, crkt, and spyderco have been pretty awesome. I'm sure there are others as well but i have personell experience with these. later, ahgar

I have a 882 CMT. The one with ATS-34 and G-10 scales. The grinds are really bad on it, but... it is the only plain edge one that I have ever seen. It also locks up like a vault. I mean the liner is exactly where it should be. Other than the bad grind it is perfect. I am not going to send it in because I fear I couldn't get another one and I don't like serrations.
