Problem with electrolyte

Hello all, last night I was trying to etch my mark on some blades made of 15N20, and the results were very shallow and unacceptable. My electrolyte is at least a year old, and I can't recall which knifemaker supply I got it from. Does the stuff go bad? Can you get out the old chemistry set and make your own? Who sells the best? Any help would be appreciated! Twig

Well was this problem a gradual onset or a vast difference between two runs? I would venture to guess your problem may lie in the contacts of your etcher, but I don't know what machine you are using. Build-up is common causing drops in voltage at the pad. Get out the DMM and check it out.

The solution is a simple salt solution so unless you see a bunch of stuff on the bottom of the container it should be good, if there is warm a bit and shake.

When I had the same problems the SS contact under the pad was corroded, I sanded clean and replaced the pad and works like new.
