I just purchased a knife with an ivory micarta handle. Its beautiful, but it looks like I am picking up some dye or getting rub marks on the front part of the knife handle when I take it in and out of the sheath. Is this common and how can I remove them? Thanks in advance for your help.

Well I hate to say this but.... YOU WILL NEVER, I REPEAT, NEVER KEEP IT CLEAN!!!!!. I tried ivory micarta for a while and it picks up everything, its a shame too, cuz its nice looking if you dont touch it

WD40 is a great cleaning agent for micarta. After you clean it you might want to put some Renaissance Wax on the micarta to help prevent restaining. If it's coming from the cheath try some Fiebing's Clear Coat to seal the surface of the leather so the dye won't stain your handles.

Has any one ever tried putting clear coat on the handles of their knives? I'm talking about the expensive stuff used on cars, trucks, trailers, etc. I know it costs quite abit but I bet it would make for a really tough finish. And a little bit goes a long way.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

As Jim said, rubbing Alcohol will work. You will notice the discoloration if you have Brass guards (and polish them) if the handles are white Micarta.

Thanks for all your help guys! I tried the WD-40, and it took some off but not all of it. I am going to try the rubbing alcohol later, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Jerry, I've had good luck coating clean white micarta with Armor All, makes it a little slick, but not too bad.

Is rubbing Alcohol the same as isopropyl alcohol? If So,I tried the isopropyl on the knife handle last knife and it didnt do anything.

J Koch,
Did you use the tooth brush with the WD-40?

Lynn,

I did use a toothbrush and it didn't seem to help. Maybe I didn't scrub hard enough? Will try again later.

Thanks,

Jerry
