Problem with my new Police model

I just got in the mail today a police model and have problem(s) and need advise.

1. The top of the tip has a pit in it, this didn't bother me that
much.

2. The sharp edge of the blade has some burrs in it.
Again not a big deal

3. The MAJOR problem, the knife is rough opening. I should point out
that when it arrived it did have lubricant on it. After doing
about 20 openings of the knife I noticed grooves appearing near
the area around the tang/kicker. Around 20-30 more times opening
the knive no difference. Note, I used many different styles of
opening the knive.

I have two other Spyderco knifes, Endura and Massad Ayoob, The Endura has a similar problem but not as bad as the new Police model while the Ayoob model is perfect with opening in any fashion.

Suggestions
a) Returning the knife to whom I purchased it from.
b) Calling Spyderco for help.
c) Any suggestions from readers of the post.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message.

I purchased a police and had a simular problem. The knife just would not really loosen up for me. most told me that they eventually loosen up, but I returned it and baught myself a JD smith on the forums.

I have two Police models and booth have been smooth as glass on opening from day 1. Also, niether had pits in the blades at all. One blade is G2, the other ATS 55.
What is the blade steel? What handle SS or G10? Are they Seki-City blades?

The handle is SS, ATS-55 from Seki-City. I was expecting "smooth as glass" and have opened it over 100 times w/o any changes.

OK. You can try this. I did this with a friends and it worked but I take no responsibility if you cut your fingers off. That said:
Open the knife so that the blade is at a 90 degree angle from the handle, hold the blade in one hand, the handle in the other and gently but firmly put some lateral stress on the knife.
The object here is to create the tiniest amount of free play. Actually so tiny that you don't notice it.
DON'T WRENCH IT BACK AND FORTH. Start using the slightest amount of pressure and work your way up frequently checking how well it opens.
Give it a try and let me know if it worked for you.
Like I said, it worked on my friends Police, but I make no promises.

Did you purchase this knife as "used" or as "NIB." If it's suppossed to be "NIB" then I would send it back. I have never seen a Spydie with a less than perfect edge out of the box. The "pit" in it should also definitley not be there.

So I would go for option A on your list: send it back to the person you purchased it from (unless they told you it would be in this kind of condition).

As to the tight opening: I had a delica like that. Someone suggested squirting some toothpaste in the pivot area where the lock meets the tang. Let the toothpaste dry and then work the knife a whole lot. Then repeat the process with more toothpaste if needed. The toothpaste will act as an abrasive and smooth out some of the metal on metal contact where there might be rough spots. Worked for me but if I were you I'd get a new knife first.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I called the company up, Discount knifes and they took care of me with no problem. They did tell me that this is rare. I have purchased several Spydies from them and they always treat me good.

This is a NIB, I examined it and appears to never been used.

i use WD-40 for everything....i got a new Delica and it was in perfect condition but a little tight opening, so i gave it a LITTLE spritz of the WD and now it is smooth as silk, it also takes off glue and tape residue from the blade when cutting boxes.....

I agree with using WD-40, I once tried silicone spray on my Endura and it actually made it tigher. I then used WD-40 to get rid of the silicone and it made the knive open a lot better. I tried this with the Police model in question but didn't help. Just 10 minutes ago I got the replacement and it appears much better but is still a little tight. I think the WD-40 will do the trick this time. If not for the shipping cost of 9 dollars for each return I would return this one also. The gun club I belong to has Benchmade knifes, I tried opening several of them, they all open easier then the Police model.

In any event I can always count on my Massad Ayoob Spydie for opening like glass, an excellent folder.

Kevin,

Now that you have a new one that is just a "little tight", just work on it. Open and close it about a thousand times and see how it is. I'm not kidding, it may take that long, or longer. But once you do get it smoother, it will likely be tight and stay tight. By "tight" I mean free of play, but smooth and easy. You don't want it loose. The knife probably just needs to "break in". All of my stainless handled Spydies were this way. Don't worry, they're worth the wait!

Cheers, Jeff/1911.

That is what I have decided on, work it in.
