Problem with my SOG Aegis - crack in handle

Guys, I'm a relatively newbie knife collector and I'm having an issue with my SOG Aegis. When I bought the knife, I noticed a tiny hairline seam going from the screw at the butt end of the handle to the middle of the metal clip. At first I thought it could be a crack but it was so tiny at the time that I didn't think too much of it. The other day, about three months later, I was looking at it closely and realized it is now a full-on gaping crack in the handle. I hadn't noticed it for a while because I really don't use the knife. I don't know if it has something to do with humidity or temperature or something. So having not had any experience with warranty issues, I'm wondering if you think it is worth sending in to SOG or do I risk being told it is normal wear and tear and then I've wasted $10 shipping it. This is frustrating to me because I love the blade shape of the knife (it was my first folder) but there have been problems with it like uncentered blade, up and down blade play, and this crack is now really disappointing. Thanks for any advice!

Contact SOG customer service/Warrenty. They will take care of you and the knife.

Ok good that's what I figured but I thought I would just throw it out there and confirm that it's probably a no-brainer warranty claim. LOL. Thanks!

I'm sure they will take care of it. But take a lesson from that and realize it is not a great knife. Spyderco and Benchmade tend to make tougher knives with better quality blade steel. Not trying to start a fight with any SOG fan boys, but since you are new I want to point you in the right direction

For what it's worth, I haven't been terribly impressed with SOG's less expensive knives, but I have a Night Vision and a Vulcan and I love those knives. They have solid and smooth lock-up, and open more smoothly than any of my other folders. If you stick with SOG's VG-10 steel knives, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

After SOG takes care of you, if you end up not wanting your Aegis, let me know. I'd be more then happy to take it off your hands (if I have the money at the time).

Sending it in to SOG Warranty so I'll post how everything goes. I want to see if they can do something about the blade centering also, the blade sometimes scrapes the handle when deploying the blade or closing it. If I get another SOG it will probably be one of their higher end folders, but if I get the knife back and everything is fixed with no problems I'll definitely keep and enjoy this one. The blade is just wicked looking and I can live with the blade wiggle I suppose.

I like the look of that Vulcan tanto.

I had same problem on my Aegis Tanto after I tightened clip too much. I contacted SOG, sent it in and they sent it back with new handle, sharpened, pivot tightened (no more play) and they even applied loctite!

SOG knives has awesome customer support. Even when I told them I tightened too much they still covered--AWESOME!

Hey guys, I received my Aegis back from SOG Warranty today and just wanted to relay my experience for those interested.

Overall, I'm fairly happy with SOG's Warranty Service Dept. It did take longer than I expected for them to process my claim and repair but the timeframe was not unacceptable in my opinion. Per USPS delivery confirmation, they received my knife on 10/12, the knife was inspected on 10/21, and I received it today 11/9. The one thing I really wish is that they would reply to emails.

They replaced the cracked handle slab free of charge and somehow they were able to completely eliminate the up/down blade play. It locks up very solid now and still opens smooth and quick! I was not expecting that. They also were able to better center the blade, though it is not perfect. But I have to say the knife is much more solid now than when I sent it in.

The one thing I noticed is that they forgot to replace the pocket clip screw on the non-clip side of the handle. However, I'm thinking that this may have been on purpose, especially given kikaso's experience with tightening the clip screws too much. The missing screw doesn't seem to adversely affect the knife at all, the handle slabs are held together quite firmly.

SOG even sent me a free hat! So thank you to SOG; I was hesitant to buy another SOG knife until this warranty issue was resolved and I can now definitely say that I'll be buying more SOG knives in the future.

Good to hear about your CS experience. For me though, while I would like to get the knife, it's not really feasible to have to send it all the way back to the US. I'd have to inspect and hold it first.
