I was just wondering, I got a knife with teeth (on back, not edge) that look like this: |_| and I got one with teeth that are curved like \_\ and I was just wondering, which ones are the best?

This is for a survival-type knife.

Well, for YOU, and your typical Mall Ninja activities, either teeth would work just fine!

I've never foudn the need for either on a survival knife, i would rather carry a real saw,an d actually have 3-4 in my pack at most times(wire saw, wyoming saw, gerber folder, and the little saw on my Wnger Swissbuck).

That being said, the angled ones tend to be more useful for use as a saw, the straight ones tend not to be very usful in my experience. They are nice for snapping wires though.

That being said, if someone wanted to sharpen them at home, most people would ahve an easier time cleaning up the straight perpindcialar ones. Course, even cleaned up, it'd be a pretty crappy saw.

This is not intended to be a saw, but it'll be used for "gutting fish" (excuse my poor english)

If you mean for scaling fish(as I've always gutted fish by using blade side to cut them open), thenn my experience is that you want a triangular profile /\/\/\/ and so on. I haven't seen a "survival knife" with a good scaling profile on back ever. But you can find a simple SAK or leatherman type tool(for some reason can NOT reamember generic name for htis type of item) that will have this for you. If you're in a real survival situation, I would suggest that you'd learn well that ya can easily cut fish open, into fillets, and then fry/roast it up over open fire(depending on if you have pan, or can fake one) and just east the meat off the other side without removing the scales. Or such has been my experience.

chiz91,

Is this for a 'real knife' or just one one of the props in your many fantasy adventures?

Why not carry a Light Sabre? You could cook the fish as you gut them. And you could meet a princess, fly in a space ship, talk to robots...

Hey Ichabod, lets keep our roasting of him to political and W&C.

No need for everyone to know how much fun this guy is.

Mschwoeb,

Sorry, my apology.

I come from an intense, romantic people. To us, lust is as important as food.

And in that vein, I'm going to eat chiz's lunch.:D

One of my first thoughts were to put serrations - not teeth - on the back edge on a double-edged blade, but I became a bit uncertain. I am still trying to find the best combo between teeth and serrations, even though I pretty much find the teeth to be for looks alone when I thoroughly and honestly run the thought by myself over and over again...

Yes, this is for a real knife, not sure who'll make it yet, however, and yes again, keep the politics (/taunting) in the forum for that.

why not just get a knife with serrations in front?
many knives come with that option (PE/CE)

PEACE!

So if they do not make a good saw or fish scaler, and you need only one or two as a wire breaker near the handle, do they have any other use besides looking "badass"?

IIRC, the first of the hollow-handled survival type knives was a special by Bo Randall back in the early 1960s for a combat medic bound for S.E. Asia. Bo described it very well in one of his catalogues and I should think that the description is still available somewhere. But the point here is that he said that the teeth on the back of the blade were so that the owner could saw through the aluminum skin and/or plexiglass windscreen on a downed helicopter or aircraft to gain access to injured men inside or to escape from the aircraft. The teeth were fairly fine so as not to hang up on the aluminum.
