Problem with SG2 Junkyad Dog

I've now had two of the JYD II knives with the SG2 blades. Each one of them has had the same problem: When I open it the frame lock rubs on the blade and makes a scraping sound. I can see where it's cutting a groove in the blade around the pivot. I have tried loosening the pivot but it still scrapes enough that it can not be flipped open without a lot of force. Is this normal? Does this model need a breaking-in period? Any ideas?

In my experience, that is not normal (I only have one). I would utilize the warranty.

Here is a pic of where the frame is cutting a semi-circular groove into the blade pivot area as I open the knife:

Ah, thats from the ball detent. That can happen on alot of knives over time, and a slight groove appearing there can be the result. If it affects the function of the knife (ease of opening) then it can become an issue.

Give them a call if it is affecting the performance. The toll free number is 800-325-2891, and ask for Morgan.

The soft clad material hard ball bearing and strong lock pressure we put on the JYD knives to help deploy the blade are causing your issues. It is normal for the ball bearing to wear a grove in the clad material. Typically once everything is seated the grinding feeling goes away and the knives operate smoothly. The bar of the frame lock should not touch the blade other then when the knife is fully closed. If it is touching then it’s defective and should be sent in.

OK that's good to know. This is my first Kershaw framelock and I haven't had the same problem with my linerlocks. I'll give it some break-in time.

Mine finally 'broke in' after a couple months of playing with it. I had a Small Sebenza that did the same thing. Never really thought much of it either time.

It's possible some grit is trapped by the detente. I'd agree that flooding the ball should help. Perhaps giving it a blast of compressed air afterward would free any jammed-in grit. (Help, I'm starting to sound like a house-cleaning commercial.)

OK, after a few hundred openings and some repeated lube and compressed air on that bearing I finally have the knife working properly. Thanks to all for your help!
