Problem with sheath design

Guys, Been working on a horizontal sheath form my Marbles Woodsman. The pics below show the pattern and the problem I am having. Since the blade is wider than the guard, when I glued it up I found that I couldn't get the blade past the guard stop. Any ideas of where I went wrong or is there another style of sheath that will work better. The factory sheath is junk, and contained a folded plastic piece that has since been cut in half with use. Thanks, rtmind/randy

Sorry , I have zero knowledge of making patterns , Ive never ever used one .
I'm sure someone will be along soon with answers
Can I ask a question though .
Do you allow for the fold of the leather ?
The radius of the folded leather must be greater than what it would be on thin cardboard , so do you have to allow for bit more leather to compensate ?

Photos 3,4,5 .....note the distance from the spine to the center line. On your pattern you need a minimum of about 5/8" from the high point on the spine of your knife. Then if you use the butterfly style you will compensate for the extra width toward the end of the blade. It will disappear in the V notch.

If this is not clear, give me a call and I'll try to talk you through it. Have the tutorial in front of you if you do call.

Ken, I did allow for the leather thickness, the handle will fit in with no problem. This is the first time I have worked with a knife with a design like this. In the fit up prior to gluing, it looked good, but I couldn't check how it would move in and out of the sheath. Thanks for getting to me so quick. randy

Sheathmaker, I have your dvd and have learned a lot from it. I didn't give it the 1/2 inch, that might be a factor, but I was concerned with the blade edge trailing so far and giving me a loose fit around the handle. Any thoughts? randy

I really don't think a loose handle area will be a factor. Based on my experience and looking at the handle in relation to YOUR pattern, I was thinking that even if the knife did go into the sheath, the handle/ guard would be really tight.

You also didn't leave 1/8"+ clearance between the edge and the welt. That will be another problem waiting to happen. Check the DVD again and do what it says!!!

Thanks Sheathmaker, I'll do that now. Guess I was getting a little cocky, trying to do it on the fly. Back to the drawing board. randy

For me ya got the lump of the welt on the wrong side of the guard. Nothing to keep the knife in the sheath. Paul get ya lined out. Definitly take him up on the offer. Call him.

Thanks again guys. Went back an re-watched the dvd and followed the directions on pattern making. Will probably take me a week of so to have results to show you. After the last round of surgery on my hands, things don't work so well, but just can't give up. Really appreciate the help. rtmind/randy
