Problem with stiffnes of Leatherman Surge. Is it normal?

About a week ago I bought a new Leatherman Surge trought the internet. Ever since I've got it I'm amazed by the stiffness of it when opening, or especially closing, the tool. It goes quite harsh, I really have to use force to close the handels when I opened it for using the wire cutters. But also I have difficulties with opening the knives with one hand. Well ok, it goes, but only if I use force on it.

I also own a leatherman new wave, which opens and close very smoothly and perfectly. I could have expected the surge to open a little less smooth, but how it opens now really doesn't seem normal to me.

Maybe it would help to untighten the hinges a little, but I wouldn't know how to, since they use a very unusual kind of hinges, and I don't have a bit for it.

Has anyone any suggestions on this?

I had the same experience, although I didn't find the stiffness excessive when opening the pliers. It's not that much worse than my Supertool 200, which I've had for years, so I just put it down to not-worn-in-yet-ness.

As for the one hand opening, I put some light oil on the pivot (both sides of the torx head) and it worked wonders. I also oiled up the pivot on the scissors, which were binding a bit and did not spring open. Well now they work perfectly.

As for the adjustment, the Surge uses a security torx bit I think, but I haven't tried to fiddle with it. I'd probably leave it alone and see if the oil works, unless it's really unacceptably tight.

Have fun with your new toy!

I've been EDC'ng my LM-Surge almost a year now, never had any problems opening or closing the pliers or any of the tools.

Might be time to put in some lubrication like what bindibadgi suggested. Also, check to make sure no foreign objects, like pieces of wood, metal shavings, dirt, etc. are in the little spaces of the tool. They might be causing the problem.

Worse case scenario, you might have gotten a defective unit, in which case, if you can send it back to the Leatherman Factory, they'll fix it up for you or even send you a new one as a replacement, no questions asked. That's part of their great warranty policy on all their products.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

If you can find a fine grade oil like Mili-tec just a micro drop is all it takes to free it up due to the newness. If the tool is tweaked you should send back to LM..
Sounds like you need to play with it:jerkit: to get the parts to break in..
