Problems Reassembling a Kershaw Scallion

Hi! I have a problem with my Kershaw Scallion, basically I disaseembled and reassembled it and it's not working fine anymore...

Lately, the openning of my Scallion started to be less smooth than usual, because of the dust I think, and I decided to clean it and lube it. It's my first time disassembling a knive with the assisted openning system. I had no problem at all with the screws, I cleaned and lubed it with gun oil and reassembled it, now I can't get it to work properly again...

I have disassembled and reassembled like 10 times, adjusted the pivots screws in all ways, and cleaned and oiled it 3 times.

Now it kicks out the blade like always but stops halfway, It's like ther's some friction in the second half of the motion and that stops the blade, maybe because of the liner lock preassure in the blade... I don't know what more to do, the spring is working fine and I softed the screws a lot and it was the same...

Anyone experienced the same thing?
Maybe I lost a washer in the disassembly process (I have two, one silver and a golden smaller one) or I have to use another kind of lube instead of the gun oil I used...

I can post some pics of the disassembled Scallion in case it helps to find the problem.

Thanks a lot for the help!!!

have you tried swapping the two washers? and this may sound silly and i don't know if it is possiblebut, when you reinstalled the springbar did it go in backwards. i've had a Avalanche and a Mini-Mojo apart and it looks like it wouldn't go in backwards but anything is possible. especially if you been working on it for hours!

When I first got mine I noticed that putting gun oil on it actually slowed it down until it was opened and closed 5 or 6 times. I only use Breakfree CLP on my folders anymore. You probably have it together right as assembly is pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the feedbak, I checked the two washers and it's impossible to get them positioned wrong, If I try to put the big one at the other side the spring won't fit into the blade...

The only thing I can think of to be the problem is the oil... I'll have to get some lube at a local store and give it a try.

P.D. Disassembled and reassembled 15 times by now :S

I also experienced some problem on my SAK using certain oil. Ended up using cooking oil (fresh from bottle) it works wonder, cleaned out some gunk that got trapped there ..

Thanks for the help, I just tried wth grease and still the same... Probably I'm doing something wrong, I just wonder, what side of the washers do I have to lube? I mean, the side touching the blade, the side touching the inside part of the handle or both? Until now I've been lubing both...

Thanks!

It really sounds like the pivot to me. Try backing off so it's really loose and see if it won't open properly.

Thanks Laceration, I tried that and I had the same problem. I have made some pics and a vid, in the pics you can see the reassembling process and in the vid you'll see my hand trying to open the Scallion... I hope this can help to find the problem, I'm starting to think it won't ever fixed.

That's all, thanks for the help!

Put some Miltec on the pivot area. Work it some making sure it spreads out around where the washers would sit and try it.

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems. This has worked for me on all my Kershaws.
Remove all of the lube from the SpeedSafe spring chamber. The biuldup of lube while the spring is moving will slow you down. Just leave a very thin coating or completely remove it and oil with one or two drops. The less wet lubrication you can get away with here the better, as a wetter chamber will gather more dirt and gum up. A dry lube is actually perferrable. Completely remove all lube from pivot pin and washer areas. Put one small drop of oil under and on top of each washer while re-assembling, a little goes a long way. In viewing your video what is occuring has only happend to me for two reasons.
Pivot screw too tight or too much thick lube in the speedsafe chamber and/or around pivot area. If this still does not work out post again and I will tear down some of mine and look for new ideas.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help.
STR, I don't have militech, I tried with some beretta gun oil and still the same...

Bilker, I'm going to try that today, I'll post the results!

Ok, I think I've made some progress and found where the problem is.

After the cleaning/oiling procedure Bilker told me I notice that I felt some friction after the kick to slap the blade out and before have it completly opened.

All this time I've been thinking it had to be a lubing or a pivot problem but this time I disassembled it again and reassembled it with out the spring to check it the friction was still there.

The opening motion with the thumbstud is now really smooth, I can't feel that friction anymore, so it wasn't friction, it just was the spring stoping the blade.

I checked the spring since it's, apparently, completly fine, but looking at it more carefully I found that the extreme of the spring where it engage the blade it's bend to the left a little bit.

I have not seen a new spring like this but I can't find any other reason of the problem. I'll contact the Kershaw Warranty Center and I hope they can sell me a new one and keep this thread updated to tell how it ends

Thanks a lot!!

Dumb question, but are you tightening the pivot all the way? I have had the same thing happen when I tightened the pivot too much. Leave it loose and try it, maybe that will work.

I thought that too but I tried loosing the pivot a lot and still the same, now I can open it with no problem with the pivo adjusted just to center the blade, the problem has to be the spring. Thanks for the feedback!

SanSho, please email me again on this Scallion issue. Thanks.

You know that the bend is supposed to go into the hole in the blade right? The small bend goes up front and out the liner to the blade and the longer bend sticks out the slot in the liner and into the spacer bar.

Thomas, mail sent, thanks again!

STR, yeah, I think that's the only way it'll fit in, I haven't tried but I doubt it will fit if I put the spring in any other position, I've doing that the way you say...

It's a little hard for me to explain in english what I meant with one of the extremes bend, its like the "bend" that goes up to the hole into the blade is no straight but some degrees inclined to the left... I don't know if you understand what I mean :S

Well, I sent a mail a week ago to the Kershaw warranty Service and today I had a post mail from them waiting for me :D

They have sent me not only a couple of new springs (torsions bar) but two Scallion Sets (pockets clips, screws and secure locks) too!!! I'm still amazed how well their warranty service works...

I have just replaced the spring with a new ona and, voila! Problem solved!! My Scallion opens again smooth and with much more kick than when I bought it :D :D :D

Thanks so much to everyone who helped me about this and specially to Thomas W.!
