Problems "Waving" The CQC-13

I have always liked the "Bowie" style blade, so when the 13 came out I was quite pleased. Trouble is, I am having problems drawing the 13 using the "wave". The handle design tends to naturally place a finger in the way of the blade when drawing, and it has come open slightly a time or two while clipped on the pocket, which will shred the pocket if I wave it out without checking it first. This would really slow me down in an emergency draw, as I am now use to checking to be sure it is closed first.

I own a whole bunch of other waved Emersons that don't give me any problem whatsoever, so I am going with the theory that the ergonomics of this knife is the issue. It would help if the wave was somewhat bigger, and I would make some adjustments to the handle design.

I have a 13, which is currently my most-carried and most-used EKI, and it waves just fine for me... but it did take some getting used to. Seemed, at first, like the Wave hook was almost too small to catch properly, or that it needed to have more curve to it (more like a C than a U, perhaps...). Only took a day or so for me to get accustomed to it, though. Keep at it, the 13 is a hell of a tool; too good to let this minor kink get in your way. :)

Had the same prob with my 8, I recommend what puukkoman said, kinda wave it down in a C motion and it should pop right open, or maybe try pulling back rather than up.

Traditional "blue jeans" are best for waving Emersons.

This issue tends to be one or both of two things. Pants or technique.

I have indeed found that different pants can certainly be very different, but like I said I have bunch of other waved Emersons and no significant problems with them.

i edc a custom '13 all the time (its very similar to the production as far as the waving it, i have one of those too) and i havent ever found it difficult to wave, i do wear jeans mostly FWIW, and i have been waving stuff for over a decade now, to me, the size of the wave isnt a biggie, i used to edc a SOCFK tanto which has about the smallest wave of any of 'em, and never had any difficulties waving it.

just gotta practice and wear jeans i guess.

The wave feature does seem to be a little bit smaller than some other models... But I still find the cqc-13 to be somewhat easy to deploy once you get used to it. I had a 'banana' as well before she was lost and it seemed to have the same size wave feature as the 13. I have become accustomed to my edc kbit, which has a very pronounced wave. I've always wondered about these differences in the sizes of the wave feature on straight blade folders though.
