Hey Guys....

I've got a bit of a problem with my sharpening belt...

I'm using a cloth backing belt 2X72 and white compound...
The last belt I used before I cut it. :( the compound went on nice and smooth and even..
This belt,, theres Big chunks of coth coming through and I can't get the compound into those missing areas...

I've tried applying it at high speed,, low speed,,and short of taking a heat gun and melting the compound onto the belt I'm about at my witts end..

I just took a piece of metal in an attempt to smoothen it out,,and that worked a little but not soo good..

Is there a trick to getting the compound evenly onto the belt?

It's just a Bit__ to sharpen on now,, as chunks fly off as it's not bonding to the belt..I like it almost smeared on...

Any ideas or help would be appreciated....

I sometimes use a worn out 600 grit belt. I just apply the white buffing soap on the belt as it turns at full speed and the blade seems to smooth it out.
Try another belt it may be contaminated.. sorry that is all I can think of.

Never used them for that except for sharpening utility stuff THAT I never made. My guess: SLOWWW is better and slower is even better. Besides that, could it be you are loading the belt too heavy with the compound? What do I know except that I sometimes load my buffer pads too heavy and the build up causes high spots even on them.

Hey Guys...

Yaaa I'm not sure what is going on with this.. It's almost like the belt is cold,,and its only sticking to the belt in spots..

Don't think the belt is contaminated.. Going to have to get a new belt and try it I guess...

As far as sharpening knives,, it does a Very good job,,very controlled,,almost like a power strop...

THanks

What I have wound up doing lately and seems to work pretty darn good is this.
Convex the edge starting with a x16 norax, x5, 30 micron 3m and finish with a 15micron 3m---Then to get rid of the burr.
Stop the grinder with the belt in place and run it edge up the 15micron belt like a strop.
You will be able to feel the spots that need more work.
Maybe try that with your white compound belt as a strop.
