I just received a custom 13 today.....this is my first emerson custom and what a dissapointment.

Right out of the box the blade is off center and the lock sticks so badly it takes 2 hands to unlock.

I am used to custom knives that operate smooth as butter and have perfect lock up that is also friendly to dissengage.

Are these issues common with Emerson customs or did this one just slip through there quality control.???

You may be able to solve both problems by adjusting the pivot screw. Tighten or loosen it to where is opens up smoothly but doesn't have any play in the blade, this should not only fix the "off center" problem, but it should adjust the liner engagement on the blade so it isn't so hard to unlock.

Emerson knives do have somewhat of a "break in" period, once they're broken in though the are extremely smooth! All this being said if the problems persist send it back to Emerson, they have the best customer service in the industry and they will make it right.

Jah! Good advice, Chris. If that does not work, back to the source.

Given its a custom knife i can see why your dissapointed.

It should be perfect out the box but one or two will always slip through.
If as stated tweeking the pivot does not sort it out just give EKI a shout and they will see you right

yep my 8 was stiff and the lock was stiff too but after a couple of days and some WD 40 it's like BUTTER!

I would ask first is this a new folder never owned before or one that someone had before you that maybe had the folder apart??

It may be that the washer or stop pin is not placed correctly. If someone replaced the washers by trying to smooth out the folder and they are too thin where they allow the blade to be squeezed other than flat it can cause problems. Stuff like this has come up.

Its also happened once where somehow the washer was folding over and wedging in the contact between the lock and blade. This made the lock defeat easy though and not the opposite like you describe but I only mention it because I don't know what else to mention other than the fact that someone may have over sprung the lock trying to make it engage more of the blade only to have it back fire by sticking now because its not broke in and worn enough yet to allow for that kind of spring tension.

I'd just explain it in a note with details of what you don't like and send it back to them if you can't figure it out. The off center blade can be indications that lock has been over sprung for tension also. Not always but it has come up on some where someone tensioned a lock themselves and got carried away. I'm not suggesting you did this of course but just that its come up and I've noted it on more than one frame lock as the culprit behind a slightly off center blade and sticky locks as you describe. Its certainly worth taking it apart to examine if everything was put back together as its supposed to be if it was bought used.

+1 once i broke in my Super Commander, i had to TIGHTEN the pivot screw...it opened so fast and easy.

this knife was brand new.....right out of the box the lock burried to deep...almost to the far side.....this knife will go back for repair, i just hope there turn around is reasonable.

thanks for all the advice guys but its more than just pivot adjustment.

Hmmm, yeah that sounds bad, I've never had one do that before I can see your disappointment. Usually the turnaround time on productions is pretty fast. Customs however are worked on only by Mr Emerson himself so it could take a little longer. If I were you I'd give them a call before I sent it in, and at least give them a heads up on what going on with the knife, that may speed things up for you. Good luck.

IIRC customs take 60 to 90 days for repair.

i have owned 3 emerson customs, a '6,'8 &'13, the '6 & '8 were fine but the '13 has some lock issues similar to yours, i need to send it back woulda already but mine locks up fine, the liner goes way to far over though, i dont think the '13 has any particular issues, maybe we just got a couple of bad ones lol.

Talk about outstanding customer service...i talked to Mr. emerson on the phone (great guy) and he said send it in.....within a week it was back at my door all dialed in.

Emerson is at the top with some of the best customer service i have ever had.

really, i guess i really oughtta call and get mine done been putting it oiff didnt wanna have it gone so long, i might see about getting the bolsters on mine done too, make it look 100% and then put it up lol.
