Problems with CRKT

I've got a Bear Claw and a Carson F-4 that I cannot seem to get sharp. I've got one of those triangular shaped sharpening sticks and I use it often but these two knives don't want to cut paper.

I know there are many threads on sharpening, but has anyone else had particular problems with these knives?

Suggestions?

Johnny Z,
Never had a problem getting CRKT knives sharp. I do wish they would upgrade their steel to AUS-8 at least. This would help edge holding.

I've never had any problems in sharpening them either. I owned a Bear Claw and still have a Ryan Plan B in AUS-6 and they're relatively easy to keep sharp. Perhaps you're rounding off the edge a bit?

The knives may be a bit dull out of box. The free standing triangular shaped rods that I know of are fine grained - you might want to use a rough ceramic rod or a medium/coarse whetstone to put a thinner edge on the knives. Small knives should have thin edges.

Do you have any other knives that you can sharpen effectively? If not, the problem may be with your technique and not with the knives.

I have many of CRKT's models, there for I have thier range of steels also.
Now let me be honest and say I am no pro. but out of all thier steels the
AUS6-AUS6M are the most difficult for me to get satisfactory edge on.
I've used the Lansky system for years and am quite satisfied with it.

All this being said there are some models that seem to be fine. The Lightfoot Urban Shark being one for example, it takes a little longer to get the edge than it really should but, no problem. Now, try to get a real good edge on my Fixed Falcon that's another story. It was down near impossible. It took me all night and even then the edge was OK, I guess, if you know what I mean.

It maybe just me, but I'll stick to the AUS8 and ATS34 models I can get them as sharp as I want!

I don't doubt my technique is lacking. It would be nice to have someone show me how to sharpen a blade correctly.

I've read several threads, but seeing it live and up close is always better for me...

Ideas?

We have the same problem with CRKT. So with China made knives.

But after a while, I realized that no matter how well you sharpen it, you will never get the sharpness that you want. It is more on the steel itself, not the sharpening techinique.

Never have problems with better steels like aus 8, vg10, etc.., they maybe a little bit harder to sharpen but you get satisfied with the result.
