It has a 17mm shaft. I want to do a direct drive.
Anyone know where I can get a drive wheel with a 17mm bore?

Thanks,

I'm sorry... what was that again? Did you say treadmill? I must be in the wrong forum.

You could turn the motor on and carefully abrade it down with an old ceramic belt and a piece of wood as a backer. You would only have to take it down a tad to get 5/8".You could also use it as a door stop and get a good motor.Tread mill motors aren't rated for this kind of duty.

One of the best machines in my shop is powered by a DC treadmill motor. A horizontal disc grinder. I have used it daily for about seven years so I guess they are fit for something. I can not remember but I think I shimmed the shaft with some copper shim stock. Every knife blade and piece of handle material that goes out of my shop has gone across that disc. Does pretty good to have a door stop for a motor.

I have been using a treadmill motor on my main grinder for almost 8 years now and one on my metal cutting bandsaw for the same length of time.

I just took the motor down to the local machine shop and told them I needed a 3 or 4 inch aluminum drive wheel with a hole to fit the shaft. He just cut off a piece of 3 inch solid round stock, chucked it up in the lath and bored a hole, then on to the mill and a hole on the side with threads so the wheel could be secured to the shaft.Back then they charged me 20 bucks for the whole thing and it has lasted all this time,I have had 3 made so far for different grinders with full speed motors on them.
Been saying the motor would grow up some day :D Hoping soon, but untill that day the treadmill motor works Great..

Hello Bruce,

Maybe they just work good in Ms. where we "have" to make things work so we can get by.

Now that you are back in your shop I hope we can get together at your place or mine and swap some forging ideas.

I've got a treadmill motor hooked up to the KMG right now. Works good, but it starts to smoke a bit after I grind too long. :D

I bought one of theose treadmill motors some years back and just made a horizontal disc grinder out of it, but I can't get it to rotate counter clockwise. Has anyone figured out that problem yet? It's a 110 volt dc motor with speed control. I'm going to make a horizontal disc out of an ac motor and use pulleys to change the speed. I bought a mandrel and modified it for that purpose.

Tom all you need is a six pole toggle switch from radio shack. "Off" in the center and "On" on both ends. Can't tell you here how to wire it but it is fairly simple. The switch needs to go between your controller and the motor.

I also have one on a small buffer.
I know how to switch directions using two wires on the control board but that is all.

Sounds good David. Are you still going to the gun shows in Tupelo?
Bruce
