ok i got the new 2 stone 2 sided DMT set with wood box (6x2). the x corse and corse stone works great as the same with the fine .

my problem is the x fine dose not look like it has a even coat of diamonds . and the worse thing is when i pull my blade

across it i feel snags . nothing like the other 3 , large stopping snags .

any help ?

should i send it back ?

With snags, the EF side won't do you much good for anything. Sending it back is probably the way to go if you can get a response out of them. I have a DMT XC with the same problem - tried contacting DMT through the website but never got a response, so I shifted it to waterstone flattening duties and never pushed the issue any further.

Think I saw a suggestion or two in the past, to use a less-expensive knife in simple steel to 'scrub' the surface of a new diamond hone for issues like this. The 'bumps' on new diamond hones will often scrub out with some use; they're usually lightly-bound, barely supported by the nickel substrate. Re-bevelling a 'cheap' knife a time or two can sometimes accelerate the 'break-in' of the new hone, after which they'll smooth out.

i called the web site where i got them and im waiting on a call back . i understand what your saying about the " brake in " . i just have a hard time with this when i payed good money for the stones . i could see snags on the xc or even the c but the x fine stone is made for finishing and i think it should be one of the BEST ? ill let BF know what i come up with on the call back and the "brake in" .

Thanks for your time

update - just called the sharpening supplies and there sending me a printable label to return the fine/ x fine stone and there going to send me a new one .

DMT has usually been pretty good about these things, whether it was a 'break-in' issue or not. They seem to be more concerned about keeping their customers happy, one way or another. That's always a good thing. Good to hear they're going to take care of you.

I'll chime in with another break in experience. All of my DMTs seemed overly catchy when I first got them, though it really was mostly the more coarse stones. The EF gave me very disappointing results at first, but I honestly think it was more me learning how to use the stone more than anything else. My sharpening techniques and skills changed rapidly after I got the DMTs so it's hard to properly separate the tools from the technique in my case.
