I have had trouble putting a good edge on my Perrin with the sharpmaker, it never seemed to change, so I checked with the marker test. It was as I suspected. The 40 degree angle is removing metal from the shoulders, not the edge. I thought spyderco knives where supposed to have about a 30 degree angle from the factory? What do you think I should do? If I have no other choice I will try to reprofile, but I'd like to avoid that as I usually end up messing up the blade and tip quite a bit when I do.

Spyderco knives have been shipped in the past with a 40 degree angle - the 30 degree angle is supposed to remove steel from the "shoulders".

If the 40 degree angle is removing metal from the shoulders, it means that it was shipped with an angle Greater than 40 degrees. If so, seems it needs a reprofiling (or you may need to make certain you are holding the blade at a 0 degree angle on the downward stroke).

I am very careful to hold the blade straight down.I think it may be close to 40 degrees especially in some places of the blade because it also removed some from the side, and almost reached the edge in one spot.

My wife stole ours and now it is a kitchen knife so I only use the 40 degrees and comes up nice. I am careful with the up and down part and keep even contact on the stone but nothing special.

Damn she had to take that one!

Will Spyderco reprofile my blade? Anyone have experience with this? I would be willing to pay, I just don't want to send it out and then find out that they won't do it. I already contacted them directly, but got an ambiguous response.

Sounds like your edge is a bit on the thick and uneven side:(
If contacting Spyderco didn't work out for you, check this out:
EdgePro offers a free trial sharpening so you can see what the EdgePro can do.
Click here and scroll down to the bottom half of the page if that interests you. Bet you could call, or put in a note requesting the angle you want.
Warning: you may want to buy an EdgePro after doing this:D

I would do the Edgepro thing on this one, except for one thing. I plan to get a sharpening demo on my Benchmade 630 when I get it, if I don't like the edge. I really don't want to demo more than one knife, so I may end up trying to use sandpaper attached to the stones on this one and see how that works out.
