Hello.
I need some help from the professionals and more connoisseur.

I have a Police, dont know the year but I have it for 10 years or a bit more.

Problem is that lately the blade has being getting more and more hard to open. I have not dropped it or hit it some how, just normal use.

I have clean it, very well and then oiled it. Nothing. I have used different types of oils and grease, high slip grease, graphite, vaseline....nothing.

Don't want to get a new one as this one has a sentimental value for me and, telling the truth, dont know why its behaving like this.

The real problem here is that if, for some reason, I have to use it again for self defense and I'm not able to open it fast enough, then.... I'll be in trouble.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would suggest flushing it out thoroughly with brake cleaner, a solvent which will dissolve any oil, grease and dirt in the action. Then work the blade open and closed a few times and flush it again. Make sure you flush out the spring ares and under the tail end of the lockbar as well. Lint buildup under the lockbar can apply a great deal of extra pressure against the blade tang, making it hard to open. after it is totally cleaned up, just a drop of oil on each side of the blade at the pivot should be plenty of lube, it should work easily even dry. If cleaning with a good solvent doesn't free it up, it may be tie to send it to Spyderco for repair.

Thanks, I have used contact cleaner, I think is the same, alcohol at the end.... spray it totally and clean it nicely. Then I used the normal 3 in 1 oil but still is to hard.
I have 2 other ones and I can swing them and they will open.

But, like I said, this one is the important one, she even has a name.

I have carried a Police as part of my edc loadout for years. This is mine........

Sometimes if I have dropped it and it lands on the top guard/choil area of the handle it peens over the edge of the liner preventing the blade from opening cleanly.
Check and see if there are any burs on yours in the area as pictured in my photo above.

That one is well used. nice.
I'll check, but I dont think thats the problem, I havent dropped it. But it could be that its a bit tight there.
May be some sand paper will do, what do you guys think?

I was wondering, do police models use washers?
If so, maybe that's the problem.

But, its hard to think the use some kind of washers, there is almost no space in there.

No washers on the SS police

The reason I suggest brake cleaner is it has other solvents that will remove things that alcohol won't touch. Unless it is banged up to where burrs are interfering, the most likely cause is dirt and old lube. Contact cleaner is good for some things, but this isn't one of them. I have a few Police Models, and I have experienced some that were hard to open, and the solvent bath cured them.

^^^4th one on the left, stealth one, that's cool!!

I used both, brake cleaner and contact cleaner. Wash her really nice.
Its better now, not perfect. I used some light oil and she started to go hard again so I clean it again.
I'm trying BP-2000 powder today, see if she gets lighter.

I have a very beat old old SS delica that was in real bad shape even after getting bathed in brake cleaner. I ended up washing it in hot soapy water and it quickened right up. Worth a shot even though I know it doesn't sound like it'll work.

A good cleaning is probably the answer and, as Joe suggested, brake cleaner is an excellent choice for that. However, there's an outside chance the handle got squeezed together a bit and is pinching the blade. If that's the case, you'll be able to feel the pivot pin above the surface.

Thanks, that was one of the first things I checked, but thanks.

I clean it again and did not use any oil or product, she is dry so to say. She is very soft right now. I'll keep it like that for some time and see what happens.
