Process for Getting a Polished Handle on a Non Polished Blade

Someone told me their process for this once before, but there is still one aspect of the process that I have a question on. Here is how I understand to do it. I played around with this process the other day, but in the end, I bailed on it.

Process:
have a separate set of pins that are ground just slightly smaller than the pin holes, so after the handle is generally shaped and sanded to what ever point the blade will be sanded too you can hammer the pins back out of the knife with ease and free the handles from the blade.

Then polish the handles to the desired finish.
Put the handles back on the knife with the correct pins.
...Here's where I am guessing and have a question on...
Grind the pins down flush with the handles and then resand and polish the handles on the area only where the pins are (so the area near the blade tang doesn't get hit with polishing grits).

Is my understanding of this part of the process in bold correct?

That is pretty much it. This procedure is often done on a knife with a fileworked tang or all damascus construction. I often use wooden pins that are a snug fit. They can be tapped out with care, or drilled out if needed.
