Processing a burl

Greetings. Addicted to reading this forum. History: maple tree growing between two homes in town. Burl developed at ground level, engulfing the fence between two properties, probably 3 feet diameter. Tree cut down 7-8 years ago because of potential house damage if it fell. Stump is 3 feet tall. Both property owners would appreciate the stump removed. 1) how much of the roots/root ball should I attempt to save? 2) If I can not get a tractor to lift it and set it in my truck, I may need to cut it up. What direction do I cut the slabs? I have no idea in what condition the wood is. Maybe its all rotten. If successful, how do I dry it? Latex paint cut surfaces and put it on concrete floor of barn for X years? (high desert of Eastern WA; low humidity, 7" of rain per year) Sorry if this topic has been previously covered and I missed it. Thanks for your help. Kirt

Please post photos and you will get some good advise on harvesting that particular burl.

Well, now I am embarrassed that I asked the question. Until today, I have only seen the burl from some distance. Now that I got up close for some photos, I see the core of this tree is completely rotted out. So this was a waste of time. And I can't figure out how to insert the photos I took. Never mind. Kirt

Just because it's rotten doesn't mean it isn't good.

Okay, I'll take my chain saw over and scavenge some pieces. And then to the band saw. Kirt

Sounds like it was partway in the ground. Be ready for it to have picked up some rocks.
