Proctor and Gamble hawking water purification to US Markets

Might not be a bad idea in some places. I wouldn't even bathe in what many people are drinking! :D

In delveloped countries I would be more worried about chemical/metal contanimants than bilogical hazards. A good hiking filter will catch some of the chemicals.

My first impression is that they are preying on people's cleanliness obsessions-- germ phobias and the like. There is a whole industry built around peoples' needs for hyperclean environments-- crap like spray Lysol. Most people don't have a clue about cleaning and cross-contamination. If you want a real eyebrow raiser, read up on aerosol issues with flush toilets-- the phobic types wouldn't leave the house! Getting enough rest, controlling stress, a proper diet and excercise will keep your immune system in good shape and do far more than all the disinfectants could. The purifiers would be very handy after a flood or other natural disaster or if local water treament broke down.

You should be worried about both, no matter where you are. Plenty of biological contaminants in "western" water from bad maintenance and human error (municipal water- if you are on a well, pretty much the full host of nasties); plenty of mine tailings and dump site run off in the third world.
