What will become the new ultimate damascus combo? 1084 has similar carbon content and would probably make a great tough mix. O1 also seems perfect and has some more wear resistance to go along with procut and would make for a higher wear but less, albeit likely more than good enough toughness and fine edge holding ability. 80crv2 would rob some carbon. 52100 and CruforgeV would add some. Apex Ultra would add a lot of carbon and itself lose a lot which seems like it would alter the properties of both steels significantly. Will O1 be brought back to life as the king it once was?

The big question I have is what happens to procut's properties when we start moving it's carbon content around a small amount and a larger amount. How about the other steels like Apex Ultra and it's properties when we drop it's carbon content a significant amount. Carbide structures would seem to change for maybe good or worse. Heat treat would seemingly change a lot. One thing I have seem in damascus mixes is they are tested with a heat treat for one of the steels but in these cases we no longer have that same steel but rather a significantly altered one if we are messing with carbon content.

We haven’t done a lot of testing on this type of diffusion, just remember that overall carbon content is different than the amount of carbon in solution.

If you try to match by tempering schedule you’ll probably get close.

I personally think Procut and 1084 could easy be the best mix around.... BUT - I'll wait for Hoss and Larrin to guide me on what's best. After Larrin's write up it's really got me wanting some of that ProCut - but I've got so much 15N20 on hand for the bright in my Damascus.
