At the Yellow Rose/Redeemed Steel hammerin last week, which was sponsored by Pops, everyone used Procut. The ovens were set to do this or I would have used A2. But regardless, I made the Protagonist out of Procut.

Negatives: My only complaint is that it is cold rolled, so the bars come in with a bend in them. I have to hand straighten them before the pre HT grinding so that the tapered tang comes out correctly. Again, not that big a deal, but never an issue with the slightly more expensive surface ground A2. It spalted OK, but not as deeply as A2. I didn't get to performance test it. Thats where Procut is supposed to shine.

Untested Positives: Procut is touted as tougher than 8670, but also has edge holding as good or better than A2. It is supposed to be very tough when left very hard. You can HT it to 64rc and still retain toughness.

I bought two bars so that I can do some testing, and I'll be starting a passaround here if y'all are interested with the test knife.

So the questions I'm putting to the group are:

1. Are y'all interested in my making Procut the alternate carbon steel to A2, or is it a fad you aren't interested in really?

2. Are y'all into the new 'incredibly high hardness' craze? I've been advised that this is a trending thing.

1. Pass around would be cool!
2. I asked another maker as he has some stock in. He is still doing his own testing to see how it compares to what’s on paper.
3. High hardness is great if it’s not too bad for a regular guy like me to sharpen if I do something silly with the knife 🙃

#3 is one of my biggest concerns as a maker. If you can't sharpen your own knife what good is high hardness!

Keep in mind that I don't charge to re-sharpen them for you.
