Hey guys

Im looking to buy a new knife. Ive already got a Ontario TAK, Fallkniven F1 and a CRK Shadow but need a cheap beater outdoor knife. Ok, i dont really NEED one, but its been awhile since i bought one.

Ive narrowed it down to the SOG Seal Pup Elite and the Gerber Prodigy.

Ive never had a SOG before and would like to own one, and everywhere i look the Seal Pup has gotten allright reviews. Dont really know what it is that i find appealing about the SOG, but i really like it. According to people out there, its lightweight, solid and has ok bladesteel. Only thing putting me off is the sheath. Im so tired of crappy nylon sheaths, and i dont think the SOG's sheath is any different. Am i right here?

Ive had a khaki Gerber LMF which i sold off cos it was too military looking. I really liked the knife and the serrations didnt get in the way for what i used the knife for, but in the end it was just too military looking. I also hated the skullcrusher thing on the butt. Best part about the knife was the sheath, which had to be one of the best standard sheaths ive seen come with a prodcution knife.

The Prodigy looks pretty good on paper and they lost the skullcrusher thing on it. Its black, but i can live with it. Does the Prodigy measure up to its bigger brother, and is the sheath just as good or did they cut corners with it?

So what do you think? The Seal Pup, Prodigy or stick with the blades i already own?

Thanks in advance guys!

The seal pup has received great reviews, and that is the one i would pick. I too have more knives then i know what to do with, so im not getting any more period" except for a rat rc-6 " then thats it i swear.

I can hear where you are coming from when you mention about crappy nylon sheaths, but I like my seal pup elite sheath quite much. It's the one with flap going over the knife covering it. There's also the regular strap that goes around the handle (attaches with velcro) but I found it useless due the flap and removed it.

I like the sheath for the molle style attachments, allowing me to attach the thing on bags. And it's also quite low profile due the flap too.

I don't have any experience on gerbers, but I can recommend the pup elite! I have the one without serrations and satin blade and I use it as general utility knife.
I think SOG has unintentionally tarnished it's repuation with that commando marketing, but my experience on them is good (only fixed blades). Also AUS-8 due steeltrends is in my opinion very underrated.

I'd say go for it!

The Pup comes with 3 different sheaths, right? The one you have with the flap covering the knife, the nylon one with the pocket, and a kydex sheath?

Atleast thats the 3 different kinds ive seen.

I think so yes. The one with flap also has the pocket for accessories.
I guess it's up to you wether you see the flap as cumber or not, but Im not a big fan of the velcro snap. My experience of SOG sheaths is that they atleast used to make the leather sheaths from really low quality leather but their kydex sheaths were superb.

I have a seal pup elite and have used it as a field knife (including iraq) in the USMC for the last 3 years...the finish is a bit banged up (not bad and its the "satin") and its a GREAT knife, I've used it for everything..shelter building, small brush clearing, self defense (practice against flack jacket wearing dummies) opening cans, cutting rope, slash wire, anything you can think of.

water(fresh/salt), snow, mud, etc. I highly recommend this knife, it was my first SOG:cool:

holds a good edge as well.

what does "too military looking" mean?

btw I have used the standard sheath and had no problems with it really.

Hey Chad

Your impression of the Seal Pup echos the rest of the masses, everybody seems happy with the knife. And the more i look at it, the more i want it :D.

With " too military looking" i meant the massive sheath with a (removable) thigh-strap, alot of molle and velcro straps, double snap-lock straps to secure the handle, operation desert-storm khaki color and a massive pointed skullcrusher at the base of the handle.
Add all those things together and you got a knife which looks screams military and combat. Nothing wrong with that per se, as a matter of fact i think the knife was well-designed, ergonomic and functional, but just not my cup of tea.

Sometimes i regret selling my LMF as mine was the early 12c27 Sandvik steel version, but cant do anything about it now. Wasnt using it anyway.

I think the sheath you describe is discontinued, it dosent show at SOG's site http://sogknives.com/store/P37B.html, only the kydex and the nylon without a flap is there.

It is very possible that it's discontinued. I don't know why though.
