Production/Customs and Collecting Emerson Knives

I'm pretty new to collecting custom knives. I was wondering what was going to happen when the Production/Custom Service begins, will this create a new level of Emerson collecting, kinda like a entry level custom? I don't think that it will effect the value of the pure customs on the secondary market (in my lowly opinion), but will the Production/Custom create a whole new series of very collectible knives? Will they hold their value in the secondary market? I also wonder how many orders the Production/Custom Shop will take when it first goes on-line? Why are you guys going to order a Production/Custom? For carry or to replace a pure custom Emerson as a primary carrier or for pure collecting? What do you guys think will happen in the trend of Emerson Collecting once these sharp knives start to hit the street?

As for me, this is all academic, I want a Production CQC 7 with Damascus Blade and MOP handles to carry!!!

(I hope this generates some discussion. As a novice, I learn a great deal when you guys with the experience offer discussion and opinions)

You ask many questions grasshopper...partake of the sacred Canadian Club and thou shall see the light, although it may be the light on top of a police car, it is a light regardless !!

Actually CCM, these are good questions. I own a fair number of customs, and with the exception of my Rhino I have carried every single one of them as front line gear. I take my gear serious enough that it didn't bother me to utilize $500.00 knives on a daily basis.......then things got insane on the price of the customs, and for many they became either pure investments, or a way to make a quick buck (whole different issue). I just can't justify carrying these now. The good news is that the EKI production stuff is awesome. I carry a Commander and a LaGriffe like appendages now, and don't feel a bit guilty about beating on them. They are also close enough to my custom versions that I don't feel "under-knifed". I think the C/P stuff will allow the serious user to get something special without the cost or wait of a custom. There was a time that if I damaged or lost a CQC-6 or 8 I could have one in my hand in a couple days to replace it...no longer. If I damaged a C/P damascus MOP CQC7- I could replace it. It doesn't make it as "collectable", but it would still be special to its owner, and in my view that is truely what is important.

You bring up good questions . . . alot of them, but good questions none the less.

There has been some . . . speculation . . about what the upcoming C/P line is and what it'll do to custom pricing, specifically the secondary market.

A few here can probably remember back to when everyone thought that Ernie coming out with a production line would kill any market for his customs. Custom Emersons were going to be worthless . . . who was going to spend $500 on a knife when they could buy a production knife.

Hmmmm

EKI "Custom/Production" knives are individualized production knives. Production knives assembled to the customers specifications, ala cart style, from a menu of parts.

Those people collecting customs, will continue buying customs. Those people looking for a more . . . individual production knife (and we have shown there is a market here

) will gravitate towards the C/P line.

The C/P line will give us a mid level of Emerson knife, personally I don't think it'll replace either Customs or Production, but it'll have it's own following.

I think there are two factors as to what the market will be:
1) Price - will the C/P knives have a realistic price...after all they will be "factory made".
2) Time of delivery - this will really decide the market. if you are able to get what you want delivered quickly, I think they might sell at a discount in the secondary market. After all why would you pay full boat for something somebody else picked out.
However if demand is high and it takes months to deliver...well this chapter has written already by the wait for his customs.

Just my two cents

Watch, after the first month of orders, there will almost be the same waiting period as the customs.
