Production Duke in the Rain

We finally got a little rain here last weekend. If you are going to sit around on a rainy day, might as well do it outside. We went up to one of our favorite spots in the redwoods and set up a tarp to have a little fire. Since it has been so dry, we used the solo stove just to be extra careful. It had been raining for a few days so I wasn't really worried, but it never hurts to be safe. I used the scandi handyman for some fine detail work, but mostly I used the production duke to process some wood that was wet on the outside. The production kephart and duke knives I purchased have both been stellar. I really like how durable, light, sharp and rust resistant they both are. The production duke is one of the first over four inch knives that I have decided to keep. I really like it for batoning wood when I don't have a small ax and it is easier to slip in to my pack than an ax. I would feel comfortable using it as a one knife option if I needed to.

Prepping the tinder. Redwoods have thick bark that protects them from fires, but off the tree the inner bark makes excellent tinder.

Cross batoning some tan oak to make smaller sticks for the solo stove.

The duke can make some nice feather sticks.

Whittling a hot dog stick. We were rolling with grass fed beef dogs.

I chose to cook my bread on a stick right on my dog. Turned out pretty good.

Some times my partner needs some motivation to get out to the woods. All that I have to say is we can cook a marshmallow and it is game on.

It doesn't take much to turn a rainy day into a fun little adventure. Kids love cooking over the fire and I do too!

Good times, with some great knives.

Cool trip and pics 👍👍
I'm trying to save up for an arete.
Maybe Santa will hook me up.

Looks like a great time. We do s'mores a lot but I've never thought about hot cocoa. I'll definitely have to try that, the girls will love it.

That looks to be an amazing spot with awesome company. Marshmallows usually does the trick for me too.

The Duke is one Fiddleback that I know I would love but have yet to really try for. The production version checks off a lot of boxes for what, in my mind, makes for an excellent, larger general purpose belt knife for woods use. Fortunately, with the mid tech variants, getting one is a much easier task.

I really like that scandi handyman. The white and natural are a great look. A handyman is another knife I put off for a long time because I thought it would be too similar to blades I already own, but a recent purchase of a scandiman changed all that. I should just get a Duke in some form already...

Mr Todd, I thank you for sharing the pictures, skills, and adventure. Looks like you guys had a great time. :)

Love the wrapped hot dog, we do the same thing. The Redwoods and similar cedars are so versatile, especially in the rain.

I love your posts like this Tod. Your words and pictures always blend together so well that I feel like I am along on the adventure. I agree with your assessment of the production Duke. It's a winner with the S35VN and high flat grind.

Thanks for sharing your little adventure with us.

Thanks! Good choice. The arete was the fiddleback I tried to get first, but it took me quite awhile to finally shark one.

Thanks Danny! It took me a long time to try a duke and I have only tried the production one. I am very happy with the overall size, thickness and weight of this one. Although the handyman looks similar to the hiking buddy, the difference in the handle makes it much more comfortable to me. The scandi handyman and the duke make a great pair.

Thanks so much gentlemen!
