I am considering the purchase of a Paul Chen katana sword to add to my collection. I am aiming for a street price of $250-500 (MSRP $500-1000, depending on make).

I am open to other sword makes as well, assuming they are in this price range.

The sword must be fully functional, extremely sharp, and as authentic in construction as is possible in this price range. A differential temper is highly desired. I will not compete with it.

I like the look of the "folded" steels but, as I understand it, they offer no performance advantage over modern, controlled steel alloys. I guess I should decide whether the handsome look is worth the price of admission to me.

Is anyone familiar with the new Last Legend series of swords?

What should I be made aware of before buying?

Get a Paul Chen Practical Plus Katana...costs around $240. and may be the least expensive "real" Katana made.

Amen to that. It is the best bargain.

Is it the Practical Plus, or the Practical Katana that has the detachable handle? And is ones construction stronger than the other?

Thanks.

Practical Plus has the removable tsuka. It's double-pinned so strength should be fine, assuming normal use.

The more authentic katanas have a removable tsuka.
