Production Lannys Clip

I know case makes a so called production Lannys Clip. I would like to see case make one for under a hundred bucks. Maybe with chrome vanadium in yellow or amber bone. Heck I'd even buy one with Tru sharp bc my stockman takes a real edge. Because I ain't paying three hundred bucks on for a knife unless Tony Bose makes it and hands it to me his self. I'm just hoping that case re introduces some classic patterns pretty soon. I just like the look and the build of a Lannys Clip. What do y'all think?

It's my favorite single blade pattern and would love to see this myself, it's hard to use a custom knife that has so much value on a daily basis.

I use a few of my customs, but not for real hard work, your solution would make using an LC for everyday work possible.

Yes, the Lanny Clip in <$100 in CV would be nice. The patron looks very useful and attractive and CV a good affordable steel.

For years I felt the same way about carrying custom knives. Until I started carrying them and only recently.

Now custom slip joints is all I want to carry.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised that no company in this business produces a LC. I know at least a couple of individuals around here who lit a candle for GEC to make their own LC soon
I do like the pattern, and, coming from a world of single bladed knives, it's one of the first overseas patterns that caught my eye. And I think there's still hope for a production model.

The popularity of the Lanny's Clip, as far as I can tell, seems to be very recent. I honestly wouldn't expect Case to produce a regular production Lanny's clip, since they haven't done so with any of their other high-end Bose collaborations. If anyone would, GEC would be my bet, since they're already making a TB pattern in the 2012 forum knife. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Lanny's Clip from Rough Rider or Steel Warrior.

I think the 2012 Case/Bose Lanny's Clip is going to be worth the asking price.

It will be 154cm, all stainless construction, pinned shield, mill relieved liners, good grinds and most importantly its a TB pattern.

I like GEC and all but I don't see them matching the CB Lanny's Clip unless they ask the same price.

I wouldn't expect them to "match" the Case/Bose version, but I don't see why a production version, with 1095 or 440C, bone handles, and nickel silver/brass hardware wouldn't cost $150 or less.

I have a question that relates to Custom designs being made into production knives.

When a custom maker designs a knife is there anything that stops a production company from ripping off the design?

Do custom makers have patents or something similar?

Or is it basically just an honor type system?

I ask because I wonder if this is part of the reason you don't see Lanny's clips flying out of factories.

Also, I feel that design is a major factor. I would guess Tony Bose could design a better slipjoint than most. You know all those years of experience. How would it be okay for production companies to just start copy catting? I know the, "copying is flattering" stuff, but I could only see a custom maker being okay with that if they were already at the top of the custom knife making world. For example, Tony Bose.

Hopefully someone in the know can help me understand this. Maybe it has something to do with honest american companies not copying?

?

Kevin,
I have to admit that, when I was writing my first post on this thread, the same thought came to my mind as well.
I have no idea if a knife design can be thoroughly "patented", but I doubt it can be done to the extent of not allowing a company to make a very similar knife (if not identical).
As for honesty, and not copying, you might have a point...yet I can't see any level of competition between a 150usd production LC made by GEC (just an example), and a custom version of the same kife made by TB.
Anyway, I hope someone who knows more about this matter will enlighten us :)

Thanks for your thoughts, Fausto. I always appreciate your take on things. :)

To clarify on the points you raised, I do not think it would be direct competition nor a serious problem. I am simply wondering if it may be why production makers do not copy custom designs unless its like Case working WITH T Bose :)

Especially a company like GEC who seems to like being somewhat original from what I can see.

Thanks again :)

In general, people will always want more for less... and if you give it to them, then they will want even more for less. :p

Tony is extremely generous and has shared his patterns and knowledge. He has made a huge impact on custom knife making. In my opinion, the Case/Bose collaboration knives are a great opportunity to buy a production made knife designed by Tony Bose.

If a manufacturer started knocking off his designs, I would probably no longer buy knives from that company.

Regarding the wharncliffe trapper... If you guys recall, I was uncomfortable with the idea of using Tony's design for the forum knife. It's a very smart design and popular custom knife so I am not surprised by its popularity in the poll. Charlie did ask Tony and he was very kind in his response... saying something like imitation is the greatest form of flattery...or something to that effect. The forum knife was something instigated by us, not by GEC (actually I asked for a sowbelly...based on a 90+ year old 2-blade Remington, not Case's TB Sowbelly ;) ). I would have been dead set against it if Case was making the same knife or if Tony had given it a thumbs down. There are tons of useful old patterns still ready to be rebirthed and GEC is regularly coming up with new designs and patterns... sometimes quite divergent from the old.
