Production levels at Golden/Seki...

Sal,
I was wondering what Spyderco's plans are with the production levels at the Golden facility; keep them at about the same levels, or increase production there in the future? If you increase production levels at the Golden facility, will you be decreasing the amounts from Seki? Just wondering if we will see more Spydies with the "Golden, CO, USA" stamp on them in the future...

Chad - We will probably increase production in Golden with items like the SpydeRench and short runs.

We don't plan on decreasing Seki production, just reduce the number of models to make it more managable. The makers in Seki that we're partnered with are excellent in what they do. In my opinion, none better worldwide. The closer you look and compare, the more evident their skills become.

Golden is more hi-tech in our equipment but it's hard to find and beat knifemakers with 30 or 40 years experience.

Sal, I agree. Your makers in Seki are capable of extraordinary workmanship, and I'm MORE than happy (and proud of) with all of my Seki-made Spydies! I was really inquiring whether or not Golden would eventually become larger to the point that the typical Seki production might shrink. I'm guessing that Seki makes great financial sense, so that probably wouldn't be feasible. From your statement, it seems Golden will officially be the short-run/custom collaboration center for now. But, can you guess as to how much higher the numbers could be on the Golden-produced products in the future, as some are very hard to get...

Chad - That is the main reason why we have to increase Golden production. We are still behind on most Golden Models. If we can keep up with demand on the current models, keep up with demand on the SpydeRench (LOL), and not reduce quality, then we can produce some of the new oddballs like the Martial folder, etc.
