Production made collaborations

Since I have begun collecting knives recently I have pretty much limited myself to production made collaborations designed by better known makers.
Yes I have a few MT knifes and one is collaberation.

I think shortly I will be changing the direction of my collection from just production to custom made.

Probably the best thing about a collaboration knife is that it gives the consumer the ability to "test drive" a makers design and thinking

Any other thoughts or comments ?

As well as giving users the opportunity to sample a maker's thinking, it also gives some production manufacturer the opportunity to showcase their ability to live up to a custom maker's standards, and incorporate state of the art materials and concepts into their lines.

Many makers do also collaborate with production manufacturers to expose themselves (Yechh!) to customers who would otherwise be unable to access their work, and cultivate them as future custom clients. Looks like it worked in your case! It also worked in mine, as several of my custom purchases were preceded by production collabs.

Another consideration is that a collaboration allows the maker to have an income of some sort.
Given that the price of a knife custom made can go from a few hundred to a few thousand and given the time it takes to make a knife, combined with the marketing . Just how many knifes would it take a maker to earn a comfortable living ?

I think collaborations would allow a maker to "relax" a little and not have to concentrate so hard on making ends meet.
