Production mini flipper?

My son is going to be 14 next week. He hasn't gotten the "fever" yet, so I am just looking for something fun. He picked up my BF Skyline last week and got it worked in really well watching YouTube videos. :)

I am thinking he might like a small flipper (under 3"?). Any suggestions?

Regards,
Kim

Kershaw Chill for $15 is one option. If you don't mind assisted openers, the Kershaw Chive or Scallion are other options.

Kershaw Chive, Scallion, Leek, Zing, OD-1, OD-2, Cryo
Buck Vantage Small

Size comparison with a Skyline. Left to right: Skyline, OSO Sweet, Chill, OD-1, Zing, Leek, M16, Cryo, Vantage Small, Chive

Flarp- that picture is VERY helpful. Thanks!

Does the Cryo come not assisted?

Not assisted, eh? How about...
Kershaw: OD-1, OD-2, Zing, Chill
Buck: Vantage Small
CRKT: M16

The OD-2 (not pictured because I don't have one) is in-between the Chive and Vantage Small in overall length. Chive = 4.75". OD-2 = 5.25". Vantage Small = 6.125".

Some pics of just the non-assisted ones I have. Top to bottom: Skyline, Chill, OD-1, Zing, M16, Vantage Small

Since you want a manual flipper, you could just get him a Skyline of his own since he likes yours so much. It's an excellent and fun knife to own. As well as being able to handle his cutting needs(or rather cut what he decides needs cutting, we all know that first knife is).
You could get it from KershawGuy and maybe get him the Orange one just in case he drops it outside or something?
Or if he'd like the Tan/Black you could do that.

For other manual flippers in that size range Kershaw is still your best bet.
Zing
OD-1 - This is an excellent little knife
OD-2
Chill - Awesome for the price

Zing, OD-1, Chill is the short list.

Any more fun to flip? Nicer handle?

Thanks for the help!

The Boker Trance is a decent non-assisted flipper. 2.75" blade. If you want to consider thumbstuds, the Boker Hyper is a great knife, doesn't get a lot of press but it has some great ergonomics and is the smoothest one-hand opener I own, also non-assisted.

I agree with what I've read here, Kershaw makes some great blades, if you are OK with the size, you know that the Skyline is hard to beat, but one that has not been mentioned is the CRKT ripple. It's the only knife I own by them, but the IKBS is pretty incredible, one fast manual flipper. it comes in a sub 3 inch size in 2 colors I believe. downsides are it is a bit pricey perhaps (or I over-payed), no tip up carry (personal prefereance) but also it is quite thin, and doesn't feel as solid as the skyline, so mine has not seen the kind of use I have given my Kershaws, but something else to consider, my. .02

Thanks again for the help. I picked up the Chill last night. I may get a Ripple, also.

Follow up for all who helped:
I ordered the Kershaw Chill from Kershawguy. Cannot beat the pricing or the customer service. It was a little tough to flip right out of the box, but my son did not even notice. Great smile on his face when he opened the box. I see him flipping it all of the time and he has even carried it a couple of times. I am sure it will get some work at his Boy Scout camp out this weekend.

I usually tend to try to find the best/greatest, but my son is the type that wouldn't use it if he thought he might lose it.

Thanks again fot the help. I now have some ideas for next birthday.
