Ok, we all know the bump came out in limited quantites in both green and blue ti handles with numbers on the blades. I know, I had one of each but I also got a hold of a grey one, and wondering if anyone knows the production number on that.
The other thing I am told it that the colabration between kershaw and sypderco for the sypker is 3000. Does that seem like a really high number or it is just me. I really haven't seen all that many around for how many is supposed to be out there. Yes I did get my hands on one but that wasn't easy. Does anyone know?

The Spyker should have come with a card stating that it is one of 3000. I don't know if the production run was completed or not. Your guess is as good as mine on that. Also, the Spyker isn't that terribly hard to get. You just have to know where to look. It has been my experience that one pops up here every month or so and you see one on the bay every other week or so.

IIRC there are no hard numbers on the total production of Gray Bumps. Let me check a couple of places and get back to you. I would guess that there are less of them than the Blue and Green. At least they show up less often. As I neared the end of my Bump collection the Grays were selling for higher than the Blue or Green. That's been a while ago though.

On the Bumps the Sample marked models are the real treat. They have the early blade shape, thicker frame, gold anodize in the lock release cut out and the blades are marked SAMPLE where the numbers would normally be. Another rare treat is the Speed-Spec mismark. They have the early, grooved G10 handles and the bead blasted 13c26 blade that is marked S30V. There are no solid numbers on how many of these are floating around either. :o

I thought I'd throw in my $0.02.....surprised.... you shouldn't be :cool::D

You might find someone nuts enough to give it a go, but I'd bet the results would be less than stellar. You have to get all the old anodized coating (or even the natural anodize on the "raw" titanium) for the new to stick. Most pimpers/modders/et. bead blast the old coating off. IMO you would end up doing 1 of 2 things:

1) rounding off the corners and widening the grooves in the handle at odd angles.

-or-

2) not getting the handle clean enough for a smooth even anodize coat.

The result either way would be uneven coloration and/or a strangely asymetrical design on the handle.

Your best bet at getting a high quality re-anodize job would be CRK. However, I don't know if they take on work from other makers.

Thomas or Tommie may be able to chime in on how these were originaly shaped and coated. That could give some insight into who and how a recoating job would need to be done.

it should be perfectly possible to have the handle scales annodiezed actually. It is done to paintball markers all the time, the original finish is media blasted off, then the parts are immersed in an acid bath with coloring dyes. There are plenty of comapanies who should be able to do it for you. just google paintball annodizing or somethig nof the sort, and contact the annodizers asking them if they would anno a titanium knife scale.

Typically there are no dyes in Titanium anodizing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anodizing

Anodizing titanium generates an array of different colors without dyes, for which it is sometimes used in art, costume jewelry, body piercing jewellery and wedding rings.[1][2] The color formed is dependent on the thickness of the oxide (which is determined by the anodising voltage); it is caused by the interference of light reflecting off the oxide surface with light traveling through it and reflecting off the underlying metal surface. Titanium nitride coatings can also be formed, which have a brown or golden color and have the same wear and corrosion benefits as anodization.

Very interesting. So i guess the grey one is just not anodized... Thanks for the info.

Now... to see what i can do with my Sapphire...

Man, almost bought a grey one at Blade last year. It doesn't look like raw Titanium to me. It must have some kind of anodizing on it.

thanks for pointing that out spiral, i just assumed (wrongly it seems) that dyes were used, as that is the process for aluminum.

from what I can tell, that's about as natural of a color for Ti as I have seen it.

You know what else I have that I think might be pretty rare, I have a muti colored Boa. The full size one which I haven't seen all that many around...

If you search around there should be a number somewhere buried in the depths of this forum.

On the Gray Bump coating: It may be raw Ti that has been anodized clear. I don't know for sure though. I do know that the gray color is not on the titanium anodizing color spectrum.
