I decided that the Runt needs liners. And knowing that red is the most sought after color, I set out this morning to make the Production Runt my own. This time around I used poly file card liners from Walmart.

I then drilled the holes where the pins go and put the liners in place (oversized about 1/4 inch) tightening up the pins

Then I took a sharp knife and trimmed the liners to fit. This left a white hue to the cut edge.

To get rid of this, I fired up my MAP torch and hit it with a LITTLE heat. I probably need to trim a little closer in a few spots, but I figured it was always easier to trim later than to start over....

Hope this gives you guys some ideas.

BTW, it matches my red acrylic striker nicely.

Now on to the Hiking Buddy...

Cool!

I wonder what rubber liners would be like, something that gives a little when you squeeze it

Interesting. Those cards seem to be thicker than I thought. I'll have to go get some. Do you have some calipers to determine the thickness? Thanks for sharing this with us. Me likey!

Did you feel that your production runt edge wasn't as sharp as one of the handmade ones coming out of the shop.

Nope, seemed sharp and even. I usually strop things a few times with some flexcut gold or generic green, but this one hasn't seen enough action to require anything yet. I'm pretty sure that these go through the same process of sharpening as the handmade ones at the shop- Maybe someone can chime in and confirm or deny.

Just finished up the Hiking Buddy with a Blue and Gold liner in a nod to the Boy Scout roots of this knife (O.K. Cub scouts) Anyway, here are two pictures that pretty much show the process.

Again, hope this helps you guys get over the fear of tearing into a knife and making it yours.

Thanks for pictures and the caliper one. Perfect size for a liner. I like the cub scout nod. Put some wheels on that Runt and enter it in the Pinewood Derby!

Well I thought CNC was grinding an working the edge or, unless it was just on the Bushfinger. This is a post from Andy on the Production Bushfinger Review #2

Yea, the cnc grinder cringed when I told him how thin I wanted the edge. LOL. Most production knives just don't go that thin. But that is how we make them here, and how we grind them, and how I design them and how knives really work. With steel like CPM S35VN, I'm not worrying about strength, so it just doesn't make sense to have a thick edge on there.

The CNC grinder most likely grinds the initial edge but I am betting Andy and crew do the secondary bevel by hand. My Hiking Buddy has a secondary bevel and it is sharp enough to remove arm hair.
