Profile or heat treat first?

Profiling is cutting out or grinding out the basic outline/silhouette of the blade. You definitely do this before heat treating due to the large amount of material to remove.
Grinding in the bevels of the blade can be done before or after heat treat. Personally I'm impatient, and cheap...so I grind my bevels to 90% or more before heat treating to save a little on time and belts. Some folks prefer to grind after heat treat though as it gives better control, and I'm sure once your good at it, it can be done pretty quick. Kit probably grinds them faster after heat treat than I do before :D

Thanks. I've got a couple of projects I'd like to do but I have zero experience at knife making aside from putting together a kit to help understand the workings of some knives.

Let us know how it goes...you will have MANY more questions :)
As we all STILL do!!
