Does anyone use a grinding wheel (stone) for rough profiling of blades and Ti handle material, or are belts already used a few times for bevels still the first choice?

I cut it out with a Skil saw. Use the angle grinder to rough it out (and set myself on fire), use the bench grinder to clean up the high spots and finish by using a disk grinder with a table so my edges are square.

Yes I built a 2 hp reletively slow turning with a 10" stone. It hogs off forging scale and will rough profile with ease. It also takes off large amounts of titanium so fast that it hardly makes those bright white sparks. It has a very coarse stone, Ive never tried a fine stone. The stone needs to be trued very often to keep vibration down. What a monster it is!

Yep Bossman, SKil Saw. I just use a hardware store metal cutting blade. Cuts 1/4 steel like butter. You asked about profiling but like Bruce, I use a hard stone for massive metal removal on my rough grind.

I try to cut a close to my scribe line as I can and then clean up on a belt using the wheel on my grinder. Cleaning up the profile takes about a minute.

Another addvantage of useing the stone wheel first is that they sometimes can be picked up for free ,i get mine from a mill that disgard them when they get down to 10inches.Very high quality..

Allan, I get mine at yard sales. I never pay more than .50 and they are almost always new. This used to be the country but got popular with the soccer moms. They buy this stuff so they can look like they are real people and never use it. Other goodies from the Mini Van bunch include (chainsaws, pumps, Skil saws and other things that might be too dangerous to use)

I thought there had to be a better way. Even taking off a little bit of Ti trashes a belt so quickly. Sounds like the stone keeps things cooler too. Thanks to all.

I use old abrasive cut off wheels mounted on a shaft. I built a work rest and guard for it. Definitely need a guard, respirator, face shield and be ready to shower when you done the crap itches like crazy. But it works great, then clean up on and old belt. My father in-law and brother in law are welders and I can get all the wheels that are worn to much for the chop saw that I want from them.
