This is my latest, a 1266 that is to have a full custom makeover of the handle to a more traditional style for a mate.

Tang is the same width as the 1281, but without the larger radiused shoulders.
The radius on this model is the same as the 1217, smaller yes, but is there.

Blade coating removed with paint stripper and special Powdercoat removal tool, aka a stick.

Blade clean and ready for a bath.

Bath time! Pure white vinegar in shallow tray, sticks to allow circulation of acid. Lots of bubbles! 🫧

After a few hours in the tub with an occasional turn, blade has a nice patina and ready for the next step.

Stay tuned....

great project, lookin forward to see what happens next.......

Major bits for the rebuild. Alloy guard and pommel, wood halves slotted to take the tang.
I'm trying to keep the handle as light as possible so as not to upset the balance or feel for this style of blade.
More to come so stay tuned......
( I have several projects on the go at the moment so apologize for the wait for pictures)

Why paint the tang before gluing? Wouldn’t the glue adhere better to bare metal?

It most likely would, especially if you rough it up a bit with some sandpaper, but I paint the tangs anyway, just something I do.
Never had any issues with handles coming loose yet, so I don't fix what isn't broke.
