im working on a final project for this simester. were suposed to be writing about occupations. i could write about being a mechanic but i get so sick of cars some times that i dont think that i can write about that occupation.

my next choice is to write about being a bladesmith. is there any good websites, databases, and books that i could look up to cite for this project? i mainly need a discription of what its like to be a bladesmith, work conditions, job opertunitys, pay, ect. the actuall process is nice and will be a part of my presentation but i need more about the job its self.

im probably royally screwing my self over sence i cant find any info but ill try my best, if not ill just write about my occupation although im not looking forward to it.

thats a tough question......I dont think you will find much in books. Email some makers that you admire. You might be surprised what you find out ;) Nice guys!

That was mean...... But funny.

Your not going to find any statistics to back up anything that you might find. I would pick something else personally.

Faramir, that's cold, dude! KaBar, you're going to have some trouble, depending on the info you're looking at. If you want to switch to a profession like chiropractic, I can point you to the official stats and answer any questions you have, so feel free to drop me an email and I'll set some time aside to chat with you on the phone.

Start by reading the entire "Fulltime Makers" thread. I've been meaning to do that when I get about 14 hours of free time.

well, the problem is that ive got to have 1 book source, 1 internet, and 2 database. i think im going to have to widen my outlook to get the job done. i doubt that any one in that class can tell the diffrence between a blacksmith and a bladesmith any way specializing in one paticular aspect of the job is what might make or break this project.:D

i guss im getting off lucky, theres no length requirements to this final paper unlike some of the other classes. most people are having to write 15+ page papers but we get out of those requirements because my particular class was set up mainly because most of us in the class work at dealerships and only have one class a day.

Arriel's homepage explains some interesting knifemaking procedures in details (damascus making, making your own micarta, etc.). Talk to him, maybe he'll allow you to use his essays and/or pictures for your project.

Were it me doing the paper, I would start off with the background/history of blacksmithing ...there are plenty of internet sources and books to use as references for that. After giving some general blacksmithing background, I would specifically begin to narrow the paper down to the history of blacksmithing as it pertains to weaponry, particularly edged weaponry and the importance it played throughout history. I would then further specify the paper towards todays practice of bladesmithing, maybe focusing on some of the well known modern bladesmiths ...and possibly closing the paper with a section on today's trends in bladesmithing ...the resurgence of damascus (pattern welded) steel for instance, and maybe mention some of the 'up and coming' bladesmiths as a finale.

That's a basic outline for you ...and yes, I do accept PayPal :)

Man, I'll tell you what ...if computers and the internet were around when I was in school, I would have got straight 'A's no problem ...instead of the mostly 'C's I actually got. That's my story anyways, and I'm sticking to it :)
