Project I (Spear Point) vs. Project II (Clip Point)

I have held a Project I and found it to be a very impressive knife.

The only question I had is what benefit a Spear-type point has over the traditional Clip point on the Project II? Does anyone have any experience with the two? What is the function of a Spear point over and above a Clip point?

Thanks for the help!

Spear points tend to have slightly better penetration when stabbing. This one also looks like it has a little better tip strength

I just spent some time handling both. I agree with the statements above -- the one additional thing to add is that the spear point appears to have slightly more blade weight, which would contribute to better chopping ability. These three characteristics are maximized by the spear point amongst the CRK fixed blade shapes.

I'm a real fan of the CRK spear point, although I have just recently become a new fan of the Sable blade shape -- that's a different subject altogether.

Best of luck in your decisions.

I guess per what I am hearing and the CRK website claim "perfect for chopping, digging and cutting, with sufficient weight up front for maximum strength and ideal balance" that the Project I makes a better camp knife than a Project II.

I was also curious, the Project I at 7.5" blade length seems to fill the gap between the Shadow I at 9.0" and the Shadow IV at 5.5" but with the added serrations & the night index. Other than that it appears to be a Shadow with modifications.

With sizes now varying from 4.0" (Shadow III) to 9.0" with the spear points, what have you guys found to be the best size for camping chores (light chopping)?

I prefer the spear point is more strong and better for chopping, etc...
The spear point is better for hunting, like the drop point too.

I'm not going to directly answer your question. :o For my purposes, I balance out what's comfortable/light enough for carry on a day hike, and leave my axe at the camp site for major chopping. Given that added factor, the 5.5" blade (Shadow IV) is my favorite.

Traditionally, the clip point is more of a hunter and the Spear point is more of a military-style knife. The clip point is obviously pointier for better penetration while the Spear has a stronger one. I have all styles and the Spear point has more thickness at the tip than the clip points, with the Sable beating them all.

To date I carry a Mk VI  , Becker Brute :) , and an Axe  when camping. I was just curious, relative to chopping since even a 7.5" blade seems small to me for true chopping work. A 9" Shadow I, maybe, I still think something like the Brute or a TOPS Armageddon (OR AN AXE!) would be a better chopper.

I might stay away from the spear points and either get a Project 2 or a Sable next :D
