I really had my hopes up. I found out today the RB specials were designed by an engineer.... and that instead of mine being the only prototype, there were four more.
All that care. The handle, the edge tempering to the tip, the weight, polish, finish, scrollings, dual handle material, bell shaped, hand filling, shark like form...
A 200 dollar khuk. What could have been is now a project knife. Yangdu has four of the RB 'masterpeice' blades, 85 dollars each. Don't buy one of these expecting any more than my review. If you have the where-with-all and desire, these project blades could become the basis for personal experimentation and a more successful khuk. There are experts here who can and would willingly help the Initiate. I'm not one of them- expert I mean.
What I think could be done, as possibilities for the HI forumites to bat around:
remove handle and put lightening holes in the metal, replace handle. Possibly put lightening holes in the blade just forward of the handle.
remove handle and grind metal material thinner, replace with parts or new handle
remove handle and cut to traditional long thin triangle and replace old handle or make new.
Why would you want to do this? Why, I don't know. It's not that easy to get 40 ounces of tempered steel hardened to the tip. Maybe just because.
Yangdu told me she knows HI will take a loss on these, and can't sell them at expected price.
I don't worry about making a new handle, but preserving the old materials is a challenge beyond my ability. Expert opinion please weigh in.
If we can turn this into a decent and fair knife project it will help a lot of people.
