I really had my hopes up. I found out today the RB specials were designed by an engineer.... and that instead of mine being the only prototype, there were four more.

All that care. The handle, the edge tempering to the tip, the weight, polish, finish, scrollings, dual handle material, bell shaped, hand filling, shark like form...

A 200 dollar khuk. What could have been is now a project knife. Yangdu has four of the RB 'masterpeice' blades, 85 dollars each. Don't buy one of these expecting any more than my review. If you have the where-with-all and desire, these project blades could become the basis for personal experimentation and a more successful khuk. There are experts here who can and would willingly help the Initiate. I'm not one of them- expert I mean.

What I think could be done, as possibilities for the HI forumites to bat around:
remove handle and put lightening holes in the metal, replace handle. Possibly put lightening holes in the blade just forward of the handle.

remove handle and grind metal material thinner, replace with parts or new handle

remove handle and cut to traditional long thin triangle and replace old handle or make new.

Why would you want to do this? Why, I don't know. It's not that easy to get 40 ounces of tempered steel hardened to the tip. Maybe just because.

Yangdu told me she knows HI will take a loss on these, and can't sell them at expected price.

I don't worry about making a new handle, but preserving the old materials is a challenge beyond my ability. Expert opinion please weigh in.
If we can turn this into a decent and fair knife project it will help a lot of people.

Wow, i really wish that I was a handy guy. Such a beautiful knife. I would love to see what the likes of Dan or Andy or Steve et al could do with with it. It really is a gorgeous blade.

Seems to be quite heavy - and going by what has been said, too much weight at the hand.... so what would happen if instead of trying to make the handle-tang lighter, you actually weld-extended it (and obviously extended its handle material as well) thereby turning the kukri into a full two-hander?
Maybe to keep weight down the tang extension could be a spike instead of the same as its front half?
Or would it still not chop & slice well enough?

ps: I think that no.1 looks much the best profile, and if I was in the USA would be sorely tempted by that one.

Those are outstanding..but the price is to low. I am torn between #2 and #3...this will take some time to decide.

Always, always email Yangdu. Guys like me and Steve are just the good voices you hear around HI land.

Thank you for the help, munk

Yangdu takes care of forumites.

I've a 16" WWll given to me by a dear friend. It is very heavy, similar in build to the Masterpiece. But its handle is traditional. I think I might attempt to whittle down my own M knife and see what I can do.

Curious to hear from its new owner how #1 performs
-- reckon it just looks somehow right compared to the rest.

From munk's previous review, it sounds like some SERIOUS reprofiling of the blade would be in order. His suggestions for removing material from the handle are probably well-founded as well. It will be interesting to see if the 4 new owners can make some successful modifications to these.
