Project RAT...Mini Uncle Mojo

One of the BF members requested that I bring this over from the Busse forum.

The more I handled it the more I liked it. The blade shape ( recurve ), the teeth, the thickness ( ¼” ), the swedge, and the OAL was all pretty much what I was looking for….except for one little thing. I couldn’t get over the thinness of the slabs. It was for this reason that I tried selling it, but for whatever reason no one seemed to want this very cool looking knife. So I pulled it from the Exchange and there it sat in a drawer collecting dust. And then I remembered Wicked’s thread about swapping out some handles and coming up with a fairly easy way to install hollow tube fasteners. Yep, time for another project…

I had some black linen micarta lying around ( doesn’t everyone ), and decided to try and thicken up my slabs on this lonely RAT. I’d almost forgotten how much fun it is doing something like this….it’s been awhile.

Cut out and shaped the new slabs (they’ll be acting as a liner):

Ready for brass tubes:

Looked pretty good and felt even better. It filled my hands real nicely now but the slabs needed some shaping. This meant I would have to do some sanding. And I couldn’t think of a better reason for kicking this project up a notch!

Stripped…naked!

Hand sanded….sanded….and more sanding!

I sanded the spine and new liners, hoping to blend the new micarta with the original. Turned out ok, but I might do a little more when my hands stop burning!

Finished??? Hmmmm, maybe not.

Well... I couldn't recall but I guess that answers it - the mini-mojo is not differentially heat treated but thru-treated. (Not that there is anything wrong with that in a blade that size.)

The temper line in the beautiful RW you did was vividly apparent!

Ahhh shucks!:o Thanks PM!

Where in norcal do you live? I'm in san jose.

There's a mini mojo uncle still for sale on the swamp rat store...hmmm...

Not at the store but some show up on the exchange... hmmm... Now, I wonder if there is one there now?!?! Sorry.

Solstice, where did you get the sheath that is in the photo of your mini mojo?
I have just ordered a mini mojo from the company store and need a durable sheath for carrying in the woods, thanks.

Looks like a Spec-Ops sheath. Easily available from many sites (Brigade quartermasters.com being one of them).

Solstice;
Hi, I haven't posted here before, but I have a question for you. Did you use a block to sand with? How did you keep from "rounding" the grind lines? I ask because I have a SYKW Yardgaurd that I have been thinking about stripping the coating off of. Once I saw what you have done to this knife, I was very impressed and motivated to do the same to my knife. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
