I was chatting with a friend who was given an older Boker folder, made in USA. He pronounces Boker like "Buker" and I say it rhymes with "joker." Who is correct?

Well Böker is a German brand...and hence also has the umlaut.

In lieu of an umlaut, one could write 'Boeker' by adding an 'e' after the given vowel

Pronounciation in the German way would be 'Bur-ker'

We didn't have a bet on the answer. The main thing is, that I now know how to pronounce Boker. Thanks very much.

According to my German friend, this is the correct way to pronounce it

Odd that the owner, a German, pronounces it to ryme with joker, funny, that!

The rhyme with 'joker' pronounciation is probably just for the purpose of 'Americanizing' a name.

Same like people saying Heckler und Koch as 'Heck-ler and Coke' in America.
