Prooving BG-42

Good evening. Is there any way of prooving a Sebenza has a BG-42 blade without papers? I know the code inside the handle (A 00 in my Seb's case) refers to the year it was made. "A 00" means mine was made in 2000. Since S30V wasn't used until 2002, shouldn't the "A 00" be enough proof for a buyer that it is in fact BG42? I suppose the owner before me could have just put an S30V blade in an older handle, but that is ridiculous. I know it, the original owner knows it and you probably know it. But would you buy it based just on this reasoning? I have a potential buyer for it who is dubious and I'm trying to ease his doubts. Thanks for your time.

There is often a lag between scale production and knife assembly, but if you have a knife with those scale markings and the blade had no "S" or "C" markings to indicate it is S30V, I would tend to believe it was BG-42.

Hey bro,

You will have to disassemble the knife. See this post.

Looking at your pics on the Canadian exchange, (shiny screws, new style clip), one could think it is not a BG-42 blade but only the marking on the blade itself can tell the whole story, unless I'm mistaken.

Good luck - and post pics!!!

Thanks so much for the insights so far! Big help. As can be seen from the pics I just took, the handle has "A 00" stamped inside, indicating year 2000 production, which was pre-S30V by two years. That is not definitive though. But the absence of an "S" or "C" on the blade is as close to definitive as possible. I will update my sale thread with these pics and info. And I threw in some extra shots just because we all like pics, right?!? ;)

Have a nice day.:)

That's a BG-42 blade.

I can tell by the shape alone, but the lack of stamps tells us the story all though I can understand the buyers thoughts. I'm no Sebbie expert but I am some what a BG-42 sebbie fan and I have not seen many classic BG-42s. Most seem to be regulars

So a BG42 classic with no box or papers would make me ask a few questions also :)

Yeah, and I totally agree, that's why I'm bending over backwards to proove it is what it is... to try to reassure someone who is considering putting out that much money for a little knife. But I've done all I can do now. Just gonna sit back and see what happens. BTW, I saw what your small BG42 Regular sold for last year (with papers:cool:)... mine is a friggin' steal at its current price!

I traded it for a CC SnG... Then sold the CC SNG .. And went back to my good friend Dalefuller and asked him if he would sell the small BG42 back to me.

I say good friend because he never even thought about it, just said yes! So she is back home now.

Thanks again Dale! :D

I too have a "good friend" in the knife community (actually just down the highway) who has sold precious knives back to me without even a thought. Here's to great guys who just "get it"!

I just deleted an email I had from CRK about this subject. Bought a used large seb a while back and was trying to find out what steel it was. They told me during the year 00 they were using BG42. Mine has the same designation as yours, A 00.

Check out my Sticky CRK Knife Timeline. ALL the info is from Chris Reeve Knives. I have a Sebenza Blade Steel timeline on there. The ATS34 & BG-42 blades are Not marked, ALL S30V are marked with an "S". The sebenza steel timeline is at the bottom. Hope this helps !!

It does help. Thank you. Unfortunately there are some people interested in this knife who still do not accept these facts and my pictures as convincing enough proof of its BG-42 steel. They want papers.

Papers can be swapped, you don't want to sell to those types anyway..;)
