propane quick release fittings

Hello,

I know Indian George and some others on here are using quick release connections for their propane. I want to do the same. My original plan was to attach the male end directly to my burner intake and the female to the end of my hose--simple. Some have warned, however, that ALL quick release fittings leak a bit and that I should mount the QR about 10 feet from my burner.

What are others thoughts/experiences here?

Thanks,

Hi John,

I had similar concerns/questions when I built my forge several months ago. What I wound up doing was going to my local propane dealer (Suburban Propane) and having them set a 125 gal tank, plumb it to my shop and run a 35' hose to my forge with quick disconnects on each end.

They installed the male end right on the end of the nipple I had just before my shut off valve at my forge. This is with in a foot of my burner.

They had no concerns about it's close proximity to the burner/forge body and the only mention of a posssibility of a leak that they made was that the 'rubber' hose they ran to the forge can weep a very small amount of gas over time.

They advised disconnecting the hose from the supply end where it came through the wall into my shop when not running the forge.

I suggest contacting your local propane dealer and talk ti them about your concerns.

Good luck.

Mike

Also, Should have said that ALL fittings MUST be rated for use with porpane. That is something that Suburban Propane was VERY sure that I understood.

I mounted the quick release fitting between the tank and the regulator. The other end (12') stays connected to the forge ball valve. When it's time to refill the tank simply uncouple it and transport to your propane dealer. By the way, the propane dealer who sells the quick release couplings should be able to install it on your tank for you for no charge.

John, make sure you buy the good ones. Do not buy the cheap ones like the ones from Home Depot. Get them with the O-ring seals in them. Check them ever couple of weeks with soapy water in a spray bottle. ;)

Thanks for the replies so far.

My fittings are rated for propane.

I want the convenience of just swapping burners while leaving all other plumbing in tact.

My plumbing is as follows:

Two large tanks outside the building on a manifold. One large regulator outside the building that brings everything in at about 20 pounds or so. 3/4" iron pipe coming into bldg. to a ball valve and guage. Then the pipe runs along one wall with 4 separate outlets, each of which has its own ball valve and a fitting to accept a propane regulator. I want to use a separate reg. and hose at each of these fittings for different forges/applications.And I want to have a quick release at the end of each hose for further versatility.

Thoughts?

John
